And mad props to you Ben, I have a great deal of respect for music teachers....I grew up playing classical Bass and Cello as a kid we had to take a music elective in Jr High...I opted for String Orchestra...blame the Stray Cats for getting me into Bass.

Funny as I blame Steve Martin for getting me interested in banjo even earlier.

Hi all I play cookie tin and cigar box banjo. Mostly 3 stringed. Letely I have been playing a wonderful cigar box banjo made for me by our own Diane from chicago, she sent it to me when I was deployed to afghanistan through her cbgs for service members group. I do not have acess to any way to post pictures currently, but I am slated to go home very soon. I plan to record a cd of songs I have been playing since I got here. I also have a cut on masters of the cigar box guitar volume 3 My band the Jeruselum mules did a cover of go tell aunt rhody on a fretless 3 string cookie tim banjo I made a few years ago. Glad to be a member

Hey everyone, I put some pictures on here yesterday but I didn't introduce myself. I have never owned a 5 string banjo in the traditional sense, but I have built a hand full of banjo ukulele's, and a six string guitjo. I love me some bluegrass. Keep the great  builds coming, and econnofoot I am really into the sound of your cheese box banjo.

Hello fellow banjerpeople. Econnofoot, I liked your introduction so I thought I'd do one of my own. I've been playing guitar since I was about 10 or so but there was always a banjo in my house from my dad's failed attempt to play during the folk/bluegrass revival of the '70s. My high school had a Dixieland Jazz Combo that I walked into because I HAD a banjo (my main instrument was trumpet). I played pletcrum style (albeit on a 5 string...) and always felt like there was no way I was going to be able to do any fingerpicking. I played off and on for the next 10 years or so and then, after getting involved with CBGs, and building a six-string lap-steel, I bought a "How-to-play-the-dobro" book and noticed how similar the picking styles were. That encouraged me to pick it back up and start from scratch with my picking. I followed the advice I give my students (I'm a band and orchestra teacher) and started it extremely slow and would make a point to work on it a little bit every day. Now I feel like I've got some good speed going! I have also been drawn to old-time music so I have begun to dabble in frailing. It sounds especially good on my fretless hand-drum-turned-banjo that I made earlier this year (I actually still need to finish it, I've just been having too much fun playing it to strip it down). Also in the works is a new fingerboard for a 1920s tenor banjo I picked up off of Craigslist. I look forward to seeing people's creations in here and I'll add mine when I get it "done." (If you like bluegrass, check out the group: "The Grass Is Bluer On This Side...")
