Hi Christian, In the UK it is hard to get hold of decent cigar boxes so I have been using wooden 35mm photoslide boxes. These are usually made of a decent plywood and as I use electric 8s or 9s on my full size CBGs I make the neck pocket out of two pieces of wood glued either side of the hole I have cut in the box and then glue a longer piece over these two to create the pocket - the neck is screwed to this. I also then add a block of wood under the bridge.

The only failure i had was a resonator with a proper cone inside - due to box size limits the neck wasn't sat as much in the box as I would have liked so when 12 gauge strings were added and it was tuned the neck gradually pulled upwards. If you want to put on thicker gauge strings than 8s or 9s I still think the method used in the Smoke House Guitars section is the best I have seen. Regards, David

Yep, those are JJBs.... I've used them and like his product. Now that I've learned to solder my own, I don't need to order his. But he does offer a good piezo setup and I highly recommend him!

This discussion on bracing is very helpful.... For the builds that I am doing with single coil pups, I'm doing the block of wood thing and routing out the pup spaces. But I am also doing some with bolt-on necks and planned to do the block of wood route as well. I don't like the idea of stuffing an old guitar body into a box because it takes away from that sense that the guitar is something that I built, but I have an old beat-up first act that I am tempted to try it on. Problem is it is made in China and I worry about what toxins might emit from it when I cut into it..... who knows what's in the paint!

I once used a God of Fire box with a 2x6 inside. A bridge pick and a screw on neck. Came out very well, I played it for a while then sold it down to someone down in Texas....

thanks guys. but now how are yo bolting your neck down. i had thought about useing a solid slab of wood or body of a guitar inside and bolt it all back down. has anyone done that and did it come out ok.

I have been having good luck on X bracing variations.
