Hello, i am going to be adding a zero fret instead of a nut on my fret boards, and i have a question about where to cut the fret slot for the zero fret. I have a C.B. gitty fret chart and i am using the 25' scale. The nut is marked on the chart in grey.

My question is where do i mark and cut the slot for the zero fret? Do i use the front edge of the chart line?

Thanks Kenny

You mark the crown of the zero fret right where the front edge of the nut would normally be. Your scale length would be zero fret to bridge.

Crown of zero fret to bridge or front edge of zero fret?

thanks

The center of the zero fret should be right on the line.

When you have a regular nut, the string exits the nut on the edge. It is that edge where you want the center of your zero fret.

Truthfully, cutting by hand you will always have some error, and a tiny error at the nut (small fraction of a mm) won't matter that much.

To give you an example: the slot you see on the photo shows the initial position of the crown of the zero fret, so the rear side could be a better approximation:

The position of the zero fret was optimized experimentally for a strange combination of tuning and string gauges: its position for the low string would be the normal case.

Thank you.
