I figured I would start a thread to talk about where we all get our materials to build CBG's. If someone can tell me a cheap source for electronics and pickups I'll tell you how to get a set of quality tuning pegs (6 to a side) for $12 shipped. Everything else I either get direct from the Martin Guitar factory since I live around the corner from it, or the wood from lowes. Let us know!

Piezos from whoever is the cheapest, some stuff from Stewart Macdonald, wood from Home Depot/Menard's
I've had good luck with Grizzly Industrial for decent woodworking tools and basic lutherie supplies.
Sam,
Thanks for the info on the piezos and jacks. Always looking to save a buck.

Ronnie,

if you're asking about piezos from Digikey, I use part no. 102-1126-ND .92500 37.00 T description... "BUZZER PIEZO ELEMENT 6.5KHZ 20MM"... these are about 3/4" in diameter with about 4" of wire lead attached. Very stable and can take abuse (If often trim them with shears for special installation) Last order of 40 piezos cost me $ 41.53 delivered)

if you're refering to jacks, I'm not that particular, although if you can get "long necked" ones (about 1/4 long jack shaft) it makes installation easier...

Which ones do you get Sam?

Diane,

Plugs (jacks?) from ebay 20-30 at a time. peizos for www.digikey.com again 20-40 at a time. better quality on the piezo's already wired and not in a plastic housing.....

the best,

Sam

Dont't y'all get your piezos and plugs from the Radio Shack?
1/4 jacks- Radio shack
Peizo's - Old alarm clocks from good will
Cigar boxes- Local antuiqe shops
Wood- Home depot, Ace Hardware
Wire for electronics- anywhere I can find it
Tuning Pegs- Local music store that is expensive as all get out.
Homemade pickups? I am working on using coils from old transformers/dc converters....so far, things are going pretty good. I made a nice diddley bow pickup the other night...you can hear it on my new video "Riding On" posted here on the nation.
I don't use products that ship from Hong Kong or China. I can get tuning pegs from the US from 12 dollars. I sell them on my website, but of course they are marked up so I can make a profit. www.Euphman06.webs.com
Not to start an argument here, but don't most tuning pegs now days come from a manufacturer somewhere overseas? I agree, too much stuff comes from there but it seems unavoidable.

Yes, I agree with that... I just don't buy them from sources over seas directly when I'd have to worry about import duties and all that junk. If I can buy them from a US source I will, regardless of where they came from before that.

Wes,

I saw you eBay source for tuners is in Hong Kong and their fine print says you are responsible for customs duties (import taxes) and to contact US customs directly before bidding. What is the story on that?

radio shack piezos # 273-073 $1.99 Take piezo out of black case it works much better. 1/4" plug jacks same place intermnal jack 2/$4.00 external pigtail female jack 2/ $4.00 they also have potentiometers for $4.00. Hope this helps now about those tuning pegs? where do I getem?
I don't buy from Hong Kong because of that little sentence about customs and all of that, so I don't even bother. I would be interested in knowing if anyone here used Hong Kong ebay parts and how they dealt with the whole customs thing.
ya know i dont begrudge anyone in business a profit but wow! charging twice what you paid for them? too rich for me. I like my source better but thanks anyway.

So you'd complain about spending 4 bucks a tuning peg when they can go for 10 plus easily? Yes, charging twice as much does sound like a lot when you put it that way....but not when twice as much is 4 dollars.. What's the sense of selling something if you'd make a dollar profit for every one you sell? Is it worth the hassle?

I haven't had to pay anything more than the bid price. I think that's standard seller stuff. I've gotten a bunch from them and haven't paid any more than bid + shipping.

Plus this is what it says:

# International Buyers Note:
1) Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer ' s responsibility.
2) Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.

#We ship to these countries only: Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, New zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Ireland, Singapore, Japan, South-Korea. If your country is not in this list, please contact us before you bid.

I assume that means non-US countries.

Here's what I paid:
