Seems like (for me) there's a learning curve when it comes to finishing a neck.
So far I've tried minwax stain in the past and now just tried formsbys (high gloss).
The formbys has left a sticky feeling. I realize your suppose to coat several times but this is already sticky.. I read somewhere sanding after 1 coat not advisable as your just removing what you just oiled /varnished....
Which brings me to another subject ...is this real tung oil or a combination of tung oil and varnish...I think it's the latter
One thing about fretted necks is if you finish them after you fret the neck it's extremely hard to sand if you run into problems such as I ...
So a few questions please
1. How do I make the formbys not sticky or should I remove it or sand it or steel wool it?
2. Next time should I finish a neck before fretting?

Some mistakes are not mistakes

Think Fender maple Tele or Strat.  They start with a thicker neck of solid maple and treat the top as the fretboard.  I've done it, like the other way better.  (you can use fancy wood in the fretboad and use "plain" maple in the neck.)

fretting the fretboard before installation on the neck seems counter-intuitive.  If either the neck or the freboard has any irregularity,  the completed neck will have frets that may need a lot of dressing.

The solution to "not messing up the entire instrument" is don't let the tool slip... seriously, after a few builds, you should be competitent enough those "accidents" become rare.  I just think the end product is a better player when you finish/fret the completed neck.....

JMHO.... the best,  Sam

Eric , can you elaborate this process. This sounds good

everyone is free to experiment with whatever magic potions that take their fancy but John I think in your case you're making things hard for yourself -

it is best to install the frets after the fretboard has been glued on as the force of pressure from the clamps might distort the frets,

smooth the surface of the neck  as well as you can before installing frets then give  two or three of coats of spray lacquer , frets and all, lightly sanding the back of ther neck between each coat.

Thank you for this. Your help is greatly appreciated as well others on this forum.

Tru-oil is a great way to go!

Another vote for Tru-Oil if you can get it.  Easy to use and dries so fast.  I've used it on my last couple builds and a few other woodworking projects lately and can't believe it took me this long to find it.

Now isn't that one sweet looking git on the gearpage link!

Tru-Oil isn't necessarily that labor intensive, that guy just took it to Pro level!

Oh and, Ron knows damn near everything or where to find it!!!!

Go to www.birchwoodcasey.com to buy Tru-Oil direct. You can buy more for less.
