Building a 7 layer laminated neck (alternating oak with poplar) and want to scarf the head join. Is it practical to do this by hand? I do have a compound saw but not sure if it would cut at 15 degrees so am thinking of making a simple mitre box. Antone done this with any success before? This is for a CBG P-Bass btw.....

I built a fixture for my miter/chop saw that holds the neck stock in place. Works great and gives a clean cut. I used to do it on my table saw with a sled I built. The miter saw is quicker. You could build a miter box to do it by hand but since you have the miter/chop saw...

If you`re using 7 layers of timber, laminated, then you don`t have to use any joints at all!

I cut mine out from a rough template as below.

I have all my wood cut at the yard from 2 metre lengths down to between 6-10 mm.Perfect for laminted necks and also the off-cuts are used for fretboards.Very little waste and no problems with making joints.

Pretty much the way I'm doin it

Thanks for posting up Dan.  I was going to post the same.  :)

Ive done quite a few scarfs and still refuse to buy power tools . I dont even own a drill .

Follow these steps

Thanks Mike for the sketches. I had an idea tho.....my neck blank is thick enough to actually carve the headstock angle. Would that be as strong as a scarf.

One piece necks are a lot stronger than scarf jointed ones, if you can do that then do it! less work and more strength as long as you are using a decent hardwood.

Nope, not true

Depends which way you have your laminations (vertical will be stronger ). If you have enough depth in your neck blank to cut your head angle it seems a shame to end up with so much waste timber. Scarf it and you could end up with enough for two necks.

To add strength you can always add wings to the headstock ( gives more width for a more ornate shape ) then finish the top face with an 1/8" thick contrasting timber to hide the scarf/wing joints

I prefer to put the headstock over top rather than underneath.  This way the fret board covers the glue joint and provides more strength.  Longer bond length and glue on two surfaces rather than just the one.  Lots of people do it the way Michael does and are successful too.  I think it comes down to personal preference.
