Hello! Very interested in CBG's, but have yet to build/buy one.   Wondering if someone could compare playing a 3 string in Open G to a 5 string.    I dabble in Open G and am trying to picture how you'd play The Rolling Stones' Brown Sugar as an example? Thanks.

I'm not sure about a five string. But I have played a few different open tunings on a six. The main difference is what you put into it. Yes you can get more out of more strings. But it doesn't mean you cant get complexities out of just three.

It's funny you mention the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards used a lot of different tunings to get the sounds he was looking for. Along with his always upstroke guitar playing. To be honest I've played the song on a six string with standard tuning. Never tried it on a three.   Now to go try it.

I'm making a video response. Should be up shortly.

If you have any questions let me know. I'll answer as best I can.

To continue on with this. I struggled quite a bit when first going from a standard tuning six string to open tuning of any string count. I found myself tuning everything to standard. The first song I ever wrote was on a standard tuned three string. The third, fourth and fifth strings. The more I play with the open tunings the richer and more complex music I'm able to create. 1,4,8 and 1,5,8 and recently 1,5,9 tunings. With each different tuning your  able to get different sounds.

What I did to familiarize myself with each tuning. First I started with a single fretted note will playing the other two strings open. Did this on each string up and down the neck. Then two fretted notes with one open. As many different combinations as I could thing of. Covering the entire neck. Then tried different three note cord forms. Played with one tuning for a wile. Till I got completely comfortable with it. This will help you get to know each tuning no matter how many strings your using.
