Greetings CBN!

I know you must seen this question before, but what the hell, I'll ask again. Maybe will find some help here.

I'm an Israeli expat living in Prague, Czech Republic. I just found CBG few weeks back and yesterday completed my first 3-string fretless (out of tea box, but looks and sounds ok). I'm already thinking about the next build, but the thing is I can't find a cigar box. I tried everything, tobacco shops, ebay, Amazon, etc. No one have, or willing to ship it to me. I can't build my own boxes sine I have limited amount of tools and working space (I'm renting a flat in a city center).

Locals don't know about CBG, so its hard make tobacco sellers exited and find me an empty box. When I ask and trying to explain they look at me like I'm an alien, spitting a green goo (my Czech language skills are close to nothing, that also might be a reason for their reaction :)).

I was wondering if anyone can suggest where to look, or order from. Maybe you have few extra boxes and you will be able to send it to me (I'll cover the costs obviously). I tried couple of shops who ship internationally, but they charge a $30 shipment fee on a $3 box...I'm running out of options.

Help/suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks

I build my own boxes on my desk in what was our combination guest room / home office in a hi-rise flat in Shenzhen, China. The only power tool I use is a hand drill. A medium sized tool box of hand tools is all you really need. I have a discussion group on CBN which details how to build home-made box guitars and what I call paddle-box guitars, and other designs are also discussed. The discussion group is called "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101, v.2.0" and the URL is:

You can then use several different techniques to decorate your boxes, including wood burning, decoupage, decals, painting, etc. I personally like the natural colors of wood. It sure beats paying top dollar for postage fees buying boxes over the Internet.

I build my own boxes from scrap plywood on the top of my very crowded WorkMate ( see pics on my Profile page; about 1-meter square, being generous). All you need, at absolute minimum, is a crappy saw, glue and patience. Or find wine boxes. Ditch the cigar shops, and start going to the local wine bars and clubs. Take your tea box CBG with you. Buy the bartender a drink, play him a song, and walk away with a box (or three). Or look for metal biscuit (cookie) tins. Find the local artisans market. Don't confine yourself to just cigar boxes.

biscuit tins work great, and you can get 'em at Ikea all over the world, 5 bucks and they come with free yummy cookies! My daughter's getting a "Princess And The Pea" limited edition 3 string fretless canjo for her birthday...

Thanks guys. Yeah I saw people use wine boxes will try to find something in appropriate size. Meanwhile I found a few that will fit perfectly for amplifier. Will look into building my own boxes too, joined your group Rand.

Shalom,

If you ever make your way to Austria (not so far from the Czech Republik), ask people in tobacco shops. Some of them are likely to give their boxes away. Or ask wine dealers, wine or grappa boxes are of even better quality but way larger than cigar boxes.

Find some Baumaxx or Obi shops, they will cut wood to your desire - you'll just have to glue the parts and you'll have a decent custom box.

Artist paint boxes work very well also -

Try lookin for old silverware boxes, they make great reso and bass bodies

Buy a big tin of chocolates and use that, trouble is you've got to eat all the choc's first

Or you could take to the drink !

Thanks guys :) Just found this one. Will work on it (planning to make a 4 string electric one) while waiting for cigar boxes. One of the members was kind enough to agree to send me a couple. I love this forum, people are so helpful. Cheers dudes!

Nice. Depending on the tin, you may need to put a reinforcing piece under the lid. The downward pressure from the strings on the bridge can cause the lid to cave in somewhat.

Try the big international hotels.  The Boscolo, Adria and Crowne Plaza in Prague all advertise cigar bars.  Pop in, have a coffee and a chat with the bar tenders and they'll often be happy to help.  I find it handy to have a few pics of CBGs on my phone to show them what I want the boxes for.  Good luck !
