Hello Brothers!

OK, I'm calling on all who have organized cigar box guitar festivals to PLEASE assist me, as I am in the beginning stages of organizing Kansas City, Missouri's first cigar box guitar festival. I have NEVER done anything like this and don't know where to begin. I only know that I feel like Kevin Costner in FIELD OF DREAMS in that I need to do this. Forget the fact that I'm the only cigar box guitar builder/performer here! I want to bring others to KC.

So, I'd love to hear from you St. Louis bottleneckers and those of you revolutionaries in Nebraska, Kansas, even Iowa--anyone willing to make the trek to Missouri.

And I especially need help with just planning, because I have no idea what I'm doing nor what it will cost to do it.

And I welcome all suggestions and viewpoints. Tell me how you were successful in hosting an event. Tell me what worked, what didn't--anything and everything.

I'm not sure what a reasonable timetable is. Is next summer to soon?

Help me. please...help me!

You will need to find a spot where you would like to hold it, space would be a factor. Go to that area's municipal building and ask where you can get permits. You may need to think about whether you want vendors or not they may need to get their own permits. One would not like to get the law involved or fines. It may be cheap; or depending, hell maybe it could be free. I live in st. louis and would love to come depending on my schedule. Good luck, keep us informed.
Thanks, Shane!

Kevin,

If I have a few months notice, I'll roll in from Wichita and be your MC and head grunt.....

Maybe need to decide whether you want a "let's just get together and jam" event or whether you want to do a "festival" to draw people in who don't know anything about CBGs.... If you ride on the back of another (bigger?) music festival (Blues, folk, rock, whatever) you can do "cross advertising" and draw for the other festival.

Let me get thru this week and we'll get on the phone and talk....

looking forward to meeting you..... I have family in NE Missouri and should be driving thru later this fall...

the best,

Sam
Excellent! Thanks, Sam!

I've been involved in organizing the Cincy Blues Fest. I like Wichita Sam's suggestion of piggybacking onto another festival. Festival's often have several stages; you could be one of the stages. If you came to the festival saying you will book and organize the stage, and you have several sponsors to pay for the talent, they may very well take you up on it.

The festival may have a sponsorship packet that explains the different level of sponsorship that you can use.

Next summer should be fine in terms of planning. I would start contacting area festivals now.

If you can't hook up with another festival, there are a lot more logistics to consider. Your venue, whether indoors or outdoors should already have a stage, otherwise you will have to build or bring in a stage. Same with bathrooms/portolets. Don't forget about advertising and publicity . If hold a party but don't send out invitations, you can't complain if nobody comes.

Outdoors also runs the risk of weather - rain or blazing hot.

If it was me, and I was just starting out, I would work out a deal with a local bar, where you would get the money from the ticket sales, and the bar gets the money from the drinks. Or you could rent a hall somewhere.

Figure 150 attendees for your first one, a lot more if you hook onto a festival.
Thanks, man. Gave me some good food for thought!

HI there

Well, I'm organising the 1st UK CBG Fest..and we are now only a couple of weeks off! I'll report back after the event and let you know how we get on.

For the venue we are using the bar where we run our weekly "Crossroads Blues Club", so we know the venue, the PA etc. and hope to pull some local supporters.

We are doing an all-day event, with the daytime aimed at players and builders with workshops and informal jam/open mic sessions. In the evening we have a gig - me and the house band will open, we'll have open mic then a set by a headline artist (Hollowbelly).

It's been a few months in the planning, and we are keeping it pretty modest in terms of size of venue and financial risk, but I'm cautiously optimistic that we are gong to have good event.

Regards

Mr Chickenbone
I wish you the very best! And I look forward to your report afterwards. I'm very excited for you!
