Well winters nearly half over and soon enough I can get back into my shop to continue making sawdust.

What I would like to know is what others have used for minimal builds, I know and have used the standard forks, brad nails etc for gear but haven't found a satisfactory string tuner yet.  Tried using eye screws but they didn't work at all.  I currently buy the cheap tuners from china but want to go to something more from the 'local hardware' store kinda look.  Any ideas???

Thx

You could do what the did back in the old days, which is tapered pegs (like violins). I've also seen zither tuning pins used.

If you are real handy, you can try this.

I was going to try tapered pegs but then I'd have to buy a taper bit and try to turn some pegs to match.  Which when I got to think'n about it decided far to much work for me and because I'm a 1/4 incher or close enough kind fella I can foresee reworkings more than completions.

What I think I'll give a go at is using the slider idea only much shorter than in the vid.  I recall someone else building minimal and used some other repurposed hardware but can't find it again.  I know...  its what bookmarks are for...  Still looking for other tuner notions, tho...

Try just a simple bolt with a winged head into metal,at least 1/4 thick, score the bolt thread with a file or hacksaw blade, then wrap insulation tape around the thread where it enters the steel, sort of a home made nyloc nut, you'll maybe have to re new the tape every month or two

THX...  Your suggestion gave me an idea for a tuner that I will have to try when I can get back into my shop come March/April.

I'm thinking if I flatten the end and drill a hole in the end of a bolt for the strings to go thru.  Then solder a wing nut to it for turning.  I'll drill holes in the headstock, angling them up towards the fret board and counter sink the nut so it sits into the headstock.  I can mix a bit of glue with sawdust to pack around the nut to keep it from turning.  Certainly going to give it a shot not...  again...  many thx.

These look from the hardware store minimalist

That is awesome ... That is minimalist CBG porn.

LOL...  I think the tuner rigging is a tad heavy for a cbg but who am I to say otherwise anyway...

Chopstick end friction pegs work well on acoustic and look good.

I use the eye bolt/wingnut method on most of mine. I struggled with initial winding until I realized I could easily drill a hole through the bolt's shaft to secure the string.

I use a washer on the eye end, but not on the wingnut end. I find that the wingnut washer makes it harder to bite and hold tuning.

It is a coarser tuning process. So I'm working on a simple fine tuning attachment for tiny adjustments.
