Hey all; i am looking for a different way to attach the neck's to my box's and make them stronger I have been using the very simple method of notching the box and lower end of the neck and then gluing them together then  gluing a small piece of oak to the inside of the box and installing a black car interior screw through the lid  to keep the box closed  i did seen one where the person installed a piece of 1''  oak board into the box basically making a soild type back then attached the neck to that  just seem's heavy??? any suggestions?? thanks  Keith

Keith,

There are lots of different ways to do basically 2 types of necks:

1) The traditional neck-through, where the neck is a single piece that either
A) extends all the way through the box, with about 3 inches or so sticking out of the end of the box, providing a place for strings and a strap button to attach, or
B) the neck extends all the way through to the inside of the box.

In either A or B, there are numerous variants, involving gluing, screwing, or both, in some cases glued and screwed directly to the back of the box, in other cases with spaces left above and below the neck, except some people also screw the top to the neck at both ends of the box...

2) Bolt-on / screw on to a wooden block attached to the inside of the box, very similar to a standard acoustic. Some people with the time and tools do some serious lutherie, creating gorgeously sculpted neck joints every bit as good as those on professional / commercial instruments.

Check the various build blogs and lots of pics here on the site for all the evil ways people attach their necks to their bodies.
Put a stick or block right the way thru' the back of the box, I do it all the time.. Don't worry about weight...it makes for a rigid build and helps with sustain.
ChickenBoneJohn has built over 300 gits, so he knows whereof he speaks...
I have only built one and a half, but it works for me also. Made my neck, fitted it to the box, made a block to go from one end to the other in the box. Glued it in and then slip the neck in place and screw down. Then close the lid.
o.k. thank's for the input fellow c.b.n followers i'll give these a try  keith
