Are there any religious sites that talk about cigar box guitars? I don't think so. This is a site dedicated to cigar box guitars. If anyone feels the need to preach, there are other sites where it is welcomed. Tiny posted it knowing that it "might not stay up long" he threw a grenade in here expecting his post to get gonged, but it didn't. Any complaints should have been sent to the site owner, but obviously nobody complained loud enough. Shane opening this site up for the world to post on, is asking for some lose cannons to walk in and plant anti CBG beliefs.. I believe politics and religion have their places, and their own web sites. By rights then, any Satan worshiper should be able to post what they want here to without any flack if preaching is aloud.
I like a good sermon too, but I have seen it before on other sites, religion and politics will only start fights. Religious beliefs need to go, on religious web sites.
This site isn't just about CBGs but also the culture that surrounds them. You can't separate the CBG from blues and gospel any more than you can separate the delta from the legba legends. Tinyguitar's original post has just as much of a place here as this thread, where the poster made the inference that hell might not be so bad if he can take his guitar.

relax... its all part of the blues.

Not getting into the substance, but a couple of "process issues":

- How come comments are turned of on tinyguitars' post? Why is that "privileged" above other posts? As a lifelong and firmly committed Christian, I might want to get my innings in against that particular fear-based interpretation of the Gostpel, but can't (without starting another thread, or hijacking this one).

- I find that post equally off-topic, and therefore equally offensive (or not!) as the goofy photo that tinyguitars was complaining about the other day (and which the original poster subsequently removed).

Sam, I guess I don't see your reply as responsive: I was objecting to the fact that TGs "dicusssion" post somehow had follow-ups disabled, as well as to the "off-topic" nature of his rant.

I'm certainly not objecting to folks posting Gospel recordings here: I would, however, prefer that folks didn't post music made without benefit of CBG or related instruments. Likewise, I don't object to TG laying a blessing on us as we watch his videos, because the videos are on-topic here. But if it is OK for TG to get up on his soapbox here with an off-topic hellfire and brimstone sermon, it should be equally acceptable for another member to post a silly photo of two Japanese goofs in jock-strap singletons (which TG objected to pretty virulently). Sauce for the goose...
Tres,

My post wasn't intended to be responsive.... I am a person of faith, but I think the Nation's Chapel is a good place for people who want to have a conversation about spirituality to do so. I understand that an "in your face" approach can be disturbing and I was simply making an offer of a different venue to continue the conversation, if you cared to.

Personally, I'm wired as a chaplain. My impulse is to assist people in their search, but only when they indicate their interest...... What anyone might have going on between them and TG is up to them....

Again, no offense taken and certainly none intended.

the best,

Wichita Sam

my 2 cents:
I consider myself as a christian. Probably not in the same way like tiny. I respect his beliefs, but I think that such posts like tiny's aren't appropiate for such a forum like this. I ask myself what would be the reaction if some muslim member of the cigarboxnation (actually I don't know If we have any, but I would be happy if we had...) would post something in the same way about the messages of the koran. Or a jew or a hindu or of whatever religion... I think I would be strongly irritated. Would there no comments be allowed?

I know that most of the members here are US americans, europeans and australians. So I suppose that probably the majority is of christian belief, just like me. So I think that it is natural that many remarks and discussions reflect that. That's fine. Gospels and the blues are connected, like some said. That's certainly true. But this is a site about cigar box guitars and related instruments. So I think we talk about a certain spirit. But I think this spirit isn't essentially linked to christianity and isn't owned by anybody.

If you trace some of the roots of the blues back to West Africa, you will find there similar ways of building instruments and you will also find that the blues has also arabic, islamic and other local influences (for example, local religions). That's why I personally think that blues is really great. Because it is a part of common tradition of totally different people. No matter if you play "american blues" or some "african blues" in Ghana or the deserts of Mali. There is a connection.

To repeat that, I respect tiny's beliefs and you might criticize that a I'm a total newbie here, but I really have the impression that this is a great community and I hope and believe that here everyone is welcome, no matter of which religion.
Ya! I'm such a bad builder I built a box out of a guitar LOL. ;-)
I think it is interesting to consider this simple fact. Most people are born into a religion. They only know their own personal perspective. Very few people do an exhausting research of the limitless religions that the world has to offer. We spend more time looking at different brands of cars to buy than investigating different beliefs. Most of this leads to ignorance and false views of others. Isolation and fear. Anger and aggression. There are many paths that arrive at the same destination. We are much more than a simple "ism". I think we have more in common than we have differences. Even though we favor one of our hands more than the other, no one wants to have only one hand. May your live go well.
Goodness all, I'm sooooo trying to stay out of this thread short of simply commenting on CBG related discussion, but one thing I think we ALL have to remember when we post off topic [read: potentially inflammatory or in TG's case religious posts on a CBG site] is that there are many other religions represented here. Gregster didn't say it directly but lets assume that our diverse membership might include Hindu, Islam/Muslim, Zoroastrian, Agnostic, Catholic, Hebrew/Jewish... Voo Doo, Rastafarian -- geeze the list can grow, and posting any obviously controversial manifesto that is not intended as the focus of the forum or site will invite controversy and might even cause division.

Sure, the blues has its roots in Gospel -- Christian Gospel, but it also has its influences in and from secular sources. Its in that case Universal and we might want to respect that too. I'm not a tree-hugging, politically correct, moral flavor-of-the-day kinda person, but if we are Christians talking here on the site, we must by our teaching be respectful of others and their beliefs. Posting any content that might be taken as "you will suffer a terrible fate if you don't believe or think like me" is not respectful.

$.10 and I'll need the change back.
