I'm considering an electric guitar build with a built in amp and speaker right in the guitar.  There will be no need to plug in...  It will be a small 9-volt amp (about 1 watt).  I'm thinking of 2 small speakers where sound holes would normally go... or 1 3 inch speaker.

Any thoughts?  Is there anything I need to watch out for?

Really small speakers will be really tinny and thin sounding. You may need a bigger speaker. Might think about one larger speaker in a hole like you'd have on an acoustic guitar.

I thought about that.  I don't think I'd put the speaker in the center like an acoustic tho... would be close to the pickup and interfere with the neck strength.  I thought about 1 large speaker in the top corner... but would need a box the right size.

I think lots have built these - they are kind of fun - in mine I used a small 2" speaker, actually out of a Chime clock. It sounds "OK" - it more just for the fun of having an amped git. But I'm sure that with the proper set up you can get a decent sound.

I'd like to get a good sound.  I don't want it sounding like crude.  Are there any decent2, 2.5 or 3 inch speakers out there?  I can find some online and at radio shack but I don't know how good they are.

ive  done a  few   guits with    amps  in  them .  it   is  best  to  get the  speaker  as  far away  from  the  pickup as  possible , otherwise  you  will  get  some  unwanted  feedback  .

i  usually  put  ONE    speaker      in  the  far  bottom  corner .   you  may  still  get a  lil  feedback     with the volume  cranked  ,, but     its   fun  / controllable  /  usable     feedback  .

you  can  also  mount the   speaker  ONTOP   of the  box  ,  inverted      and   blowing into    a cut  hole  .  and add a small sound hole elsewhere

this  makes  the  guitar  body act as a bass cabinet ,  and  adds    deapth and warmth and volume

to an otherwise  (sometimes  )  tinny  sound .

you  can  try  sheilding with  copper tapr to     get the  speakers   closer  to  the  pup  ..  but  ..  i   havent  done this  so   im  not  sure  the  result  .

although  vox's  new  Apache  guitar  has  2  speakers    right by  the pup  ,   but  im  sure the  have about  100 bucks worth  of  shielding in there  .

COOL Guitars!

Using a ruler for the bridge is brilliant...

I have copper tape, so I can build a shield around the pup.  I was leaning towards that anyway... figured it would be needed.

I like the idea of using the box as a "bass cabinet".  This should work with the speaker mounted normally too as  the sound also goes backwards from the speaker.  Maybe I'll just need to add a sound hole.

thanx,   ..   yeah   my  ruler  bridge  is  kinda   my  trademark   on all  my  swamp witch guitars .  suits  the need  and   pre -routed   etc .  ;-)

as  for  speakers  .   some small ones aint bad  ,  try a  few  different  ones  ..   ive  used    computer  speakers with  pretty good  luck.   but  some    really  suck  .

I won't infringe on your trademark... lol.

My thing is putting the decoration on the headstock....

thanx  ;-)

;-o   lol

also  .  you  may  consider adding     a  jack   for a  normal  amp  ..  this  combined  with  your    internal  amp  will  give  you  loads    of  boost  and funn  .   (and  you  can always  turn off your  internal  amp  for   normal  play  .

I had thought of that.  Would the wiring just split... one set of leads go to the amp and the other set of leads go to the jack?
