Hi Guys,

To get a real blues delta sound what would you guys suggest - GDG or EBE (or another) tuning. Sure you can most of the notes in either tuning - but ine must be easier than the other?

Thanks

Mike

Depends on what strings you have.  :)  I did EBE using strings 6,5,4 then I had strings 1,2,3 to use on another guitar tuned GBe.  I am growing to like GBd tuning as well.

EBE has a very bassy sound and I like it a lot.  Most GDg tunings use strings 5,4,3 with the A string tuned down to G.  Easy enough but then you have to find something to do with the EBe strings.  Low E can be used as a Diddley Bow.  So then it's just what to do with B&e that won't get you 5-10 in County Jail.  Har, har.

one won't be any easier than the other as they're both the same 1,5,1 tuning. If you're going to sing, see which goes best with your voice. If not then just use what you like the sound of most : -)

Hello Mike,

Like ED explained, heavier strings will give you more bass, and lighter strings more treble. Tuning is usally relative to the singer's voice. So, then it is a question of musical key.

If you are interested, check out my instuctional CD 4 for 3 string CBG using standard strings ADg (strings 5,4,3) and tuned GDg.

Then as bemuzic mentioned, because the string relationships are the same, you can if you want restring using standard strings EAD (3 lowest of 6) and tune DAD. All the finger positions will be the same.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to write if any questions arise as you work through the lessons.

Enjoy your practice, Keni Lee

i use the 5,4, and 3 strings. or the a, d, and g strings. tune the d and g string up one step and leave the a in a and you have aea. this works great cause i learn by playing along to songs and for me this aea tuning makes it easy to take everything i learned on six string and bring it to 3 string. as far as getting the delta sound by way of tuning you need to find out how the old guys who started the delta sound tuned their guitars and what keys they favored. john lee hooker for example used open e alot and put a capo on the first fret. but the real secret to gettn the delta sound is knowing what scales to play and how to adapt them to the tunning you plan to use

and remember what john lee taught us, you dont need no fancy chords, just get that beat and throw those fancy chords away
