Let the fun begin!

I hope that I may create this as a project thread where I can track my project build as well as get advice and tap into all of your considerable experience and awesome  ideas  on the way.

Plan is to research this forum thoroughly ( I have only been a member here 1 hour at this point and I love what I see. Been lurking prior)

Work out a design concept, graphics and idea for my build. (I love "found stuff")

Get into it.

Here is the base box. 32 cm x 23 cm x 6 cm - wood with  ply lid /base (3mm).

Will start by stripping it back and then decide on wood  treatment and graphics.

Thinking I will use that centre internal stringer as part of the neck thru system. (Thoughts please)

Almost certain that I will not run the neck out the back.

Will install a pick up and it will definitely be a 3 stringer

Thinking hinges up. (Thoughts on hinges or no hinges?)

Neck.

I have a great plank of hardwood (type unknown) that I will mill and finish in the workshop.

Will cut maybe four necks (overlength) while I am at it.  The plank (already dressed) is 300mm x 28mm x 104mm

Finished at 2 inches by 1 inches is what always appears to be the neck spec.in my research.

So is that definite and absolute? How about 50mm x 25mm?

How many strings? Bear in mind planed 1x2" is actually closer to 1 1/2 x 3/4". I use 36mm for my 3 & 4 string necks. An inch thick is quite chunky but will be strong and you'll have plenty to work with. Have fun!

Will be 3 string guitar.

Sorry ..but was thinking 1"  x 2"  is finished (ie.after planing and finishing.)

I kind of thought that was right after I had measured my Stratocaster necks.

Can you or anyone give me ideal "finished" measurement please. I will work to that.

Thanx

Yep, 35mm is what mine tend to end up at. Example:

sweet... love it.

Is string spacing critical? eg why so close to edge of fret board for an instrument that is mostly used with a "slide"

Thank you.

Well, good question.

I don't play slide (or is that 'can't?) so I set mine up for playing either with a pick or fingerstyle fretted. The further the strings are apart the easier to play with your fingers.

You could definitely have the strings further from the edges but I don't feel that my playing is hampered at all having them like this. They are actually slightly closer at the nut than the bridge also, just like on a traditional guitar.

I maybe changing my thinking for my project a little since I got a CBG on loan from a mate and discovered it is "solid bodied".

The sustain and ring  is amazing!

Considering a semi hollow design. ie a solid filled section under the neck for 2/3rds of the interior and a screwed down lid.

Progress Report:

Well pleased...Had a nice find today in an old guitar shop.

6 x very cool Dano electric Tuner Heads. All metal with plastic heads.

Cost about $17 USD for the set ( I have seen them on Ebay at $15 each)

I think these will do nicely!.
