Besides the old serling silver boxes that cost thousands, are there boxes that should not be used? I just purchased a box that dates back to 1883. An internal revenue stamp dated 1883 encompasses nearly the entire far left side of the box. It is a early little havna box from NYC. After buying it I'm not sure about using it. Let me know what you think. Thanks Brad

Hm...I believe that Powell, Smith & Co was bought by The American Tobacco Company @ the turn of the last century. Could be wrong though. Little Havana's were a cheap mass-produced cigar, 100 per box, and widely available. Adding to the confusion, other manufacturers used the same name for cheap little cigars. Really, they can be looked at as a 19th century Roi-Tan, so this box is probably not worth much...
Wow!! Nice looking box, and you only paid ten bucks for it!!???
Unless you are an avid collector, I would go ahead and make a guitar out of it. But, if you decide it sell it afterwards, just don't expect the age of the box to drive the price of the guitar up very much. If I were making something out of it, I would try to preserve as much of the original box as possible, and only the cutting that is absolutely necessary.
Good find!!
Thanks guys for your replies. I think I'm going to use it, if no one has a strong reason not to. And to dans comment SELL??? Never sell guns or guitars! Wife maybe. LOL just kiding she a keeper, she puts up with my sh*t.
It's a fantastic box, I'd be tempted to use it, but to be fair I bought this one and didn't have the heart to massacre it...

I'd probably use the one you have, but keep the cutting down to a minimum.
I would use it but I would first double check to make sure it's not worth a hell of a lot more than $10 bucks. Apperently not as you bought it off evilbay for $10, but ya never know if you may have that one box that the Antique Roadshow says is worth a quarter of a mil.
I'd use it. I don't generally use the word "mojo", but that box certainly has it. But be sure to pick some really great wood for the neck/fingerboard. Gotta do it justice!
And remember"measure twice, cut once", not the other way around.
Ok so ill make a guitar out of it. I got another old one this after noon, I think I'll make my First One form this....

Both of those boxes are great. Good material for building. I'm always looking at boxes with the thoughts of how they will look and sound when done. You bought them to build, not look at. Go for it!
Cheap stogie boxes can be awesome looking and often make great cbg's!
Look at this Braxton Nagle build:
