I troll Craigslist regularly, looking for bargain guitar stuff. I keep seeing Squier Strats up for sale all the time.
Are the Squier instruments inferior? I am guessing they are Fender's low end unit.
I have no clue, I am just curious what everyone's opinions of them are.

Squire's these days are made mostly in Japan....unless you find an American Squire used, but then you'll pay good money.
I bought one last year, The 75th anniversary Affinity model....a copy of the famous Blackie owned by Eric Clapton...I like it. although I've only played it maybe twice..Your right they are the lower end model, their using different wood and hardware, but for the cost, their a pretty good guitar. Used you should be able to pick one up for around 175 to 200...
Like I said, I bought it a year ago, haven't played it hardly at all. Its for sale, If ya look hard enough, you can see the plastic protection still on the guard and back plated.
Hey BTW, I know some one who may wanna trade for a Dan Sleep slide guitar.
I've got several Squiers They start at the low end Bullet,SE,Affinity and Standard then throw in the mix vintage modified,classic vibe better hardware ect the last 3 models I mentioned all have alnico magnets .the early Japanese ones fetch a high dollar.Check out Squier Talk every thing you always wanted to know and friendly folks too.If you know what to look for an early Japanese Bullet desirable also.
The cheap strats and epi les pauls go on sale for $99 and pawn shops sell them For $60 to 70.
They make great forgive me 6 string cbg's. You need 11 in. box for the les pauls because of the stop tail piece.
If you upgrade the tuners and pickup on these factory guitars they play and sound pretty good.
if you know a dealer you can get factory second for about $75 new.
My first Strat was a Squier - amazing quality, as good as a Mex, maybe better, but the electrics and hardware on the US Fenders are much better, not really a prime consideration when buying your first electric guitar, you got to learn to play the thing first! (-;
Also check out the Vintage Strat and the Japanese Fenders too.
My niece got one for Christmas in one of those beginner guitar and amp packages. I set it up for her. It needed a professional setup and fret dress, but after I addressed that, it played like butter. The pickups and hardware were cheap. If I had one, I would replace the pickups right away for a better sound, and then upgrade the hardware as it broke. The actual wood and construction seemed fine. The finish was ok too.
When people say "cheap pickups", does that mean you could improve them by cutting the old winding off and rewind? Or are you referring to the magnets? Or both?
I had the 50th anniversary strat model for about 15 years and I was happy with it. Although it was made in Taiwan, it was pretty good quality. Stayed in tune and was comfortable to play. I regret selling it. If I still had it, I'd change the pickups (maybe made my own :)) and the nut and it would rock.
