The slant is an attempt at compensating for correct intonation along the length of the string. Here's a great detailed explanation for conventional acoustics:

Thanks Ron, I have some old genuine ivory off an old piano and intend to use that for my saddle on a 6 string CBG I've got all the parts for (waitin on a broken wrist to heal), that I want to complete this summer

Hi Thumper, if I could offer my $0.02... If you're building a 6 stringer a floating angled bridge probably wouldn't be your best choice. Most would use a 'hardtail' bridge and saddle combo on which you can adjust the intonation by moving the bridge position for each string. You might end up with shonky intonation if you haven't got a compensated bridge.

...and don't try to take it on a plane if it has ivory on it :)

richey, would this bridge work? i'm going for an old timey look and I want to incorporate an old kay pressed and pierced tail stock.

Nice pieces Thumper! Should work, but measure your scale length. I'd say the height adjustment wheels are a bonus.
