There are lots of people putting lots of photos up on this site. That's great, but how often have you looked at a photo and been a bit puzzled by it. Well, I get puzzled all the time. So many people put up little or often no description to go with their photos. If people weren't interested they wouldn't be looking. Assume people want to know and be a bit more informative. There will still likely be questions, but at least they will be more specific. OK. That's my moan over for now.

Rats! I had a lot more to say but some how it got truncated. Let me try this again...

With regard to the topic of this thread, I always add comments and tags to my photos, and many of them are used in my various discussions, especially in the two CBN groups that I manage. I usually shoot 30 or 40 shots of a build, but I weed out the ones that seem like duplicates and add no significant new information. So generally I have maybe 12 to 15 photos on any particular build. Also, my builds tend to focus on new techniques or designs and my photos reflect that. I think photos are good, but they become really great if they include comments, and discussions. I have often replied to a photo and never got a response, so you should also be prepared to spend some time to answer other peoples comments on your photos. So, bring on the photos, but please add comments and tags (for better Ning sorting).

Also, if you manage a CBN group (or other Ning group), you can utilize this tag feature of photos in you HTML code that you may add to your discussion group to display interesting links. For instance, in the "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101" group, I have a list of interesting links and one of the links allows you to view a list of photos of Reso-CBG. Here an example of that code

In the HTML code snippet above, notice the "?tag=reso" parameter in the HTTP address highlighted in yellow. This allows me to specify to Ning what photos I want listed... all the ones where the tag includes the word "reso". So, you could add some HTML to the discussion group you manage and create a list of links so users can more easily find photos of things they'd be most interested in seeing. This would also work for videos and probably other sortable file types. Also, your discussion group should come up with a set of tag words that they can use to get their photos included in the next automated search. Perhaps CBN should have a site-wide standardized list of tags as well. Just an idea. Feel free to use this idea and code in your discussion group's HTML.

-Rand.

Hi Bob Harrison.

I like your box photo. Can I use it in my CBN group "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101"? Do you have any other photos on this build or that illustrate box building in general?

My hillybilly hick thought on writting  that I try to use is this. It should be like a ladys dress long enought to cover the subject,  but short enought to be intersting.:)

I'm going to agree with John on this. That's mainly because, as an editor for a few large, online publications, it makes me nuts when I see a photo with no caption (I just use a boilerplate response these days "please provide an informative caption of 12 words or less; do not begin the caption with an imperative verb").

Of course, this is just a personal quirk -- some might call it insanity -- and has little to do with the issue at hand. It may just be that I've already sent five articles back to authors for rewrites this morning . . . all missing captions.

Hmmm . . . either too much or too little coffee, methinks.

I bow to the experience of my friend in the Ozarks.... I'll try to do better....

Still having trouble uploaing a photo on profile page. I've tried every pic I got and still no go. HELP
i've asked this ? before but prob in the wrong place. if i want to make a photo album- diary of a build -for instance, do i have to show them all first. i have tried to make one but cannot upload a folderful from my HD. any clues??
I think you need to upload all the pictures first. Then go to your home page and click on Photo Albums. Create a new photo album and then drag the pictures you uploaded into the new album.

I am pretty sure that it is possible to add the album first if you want. If you go to your own page and find the link to "Photo Albums" on the left hand side. Once you see your existing albums you will also see a button towards the top right that says "+Add". Click on that and you have the dialogue for adding an album including title, description and tags. Press "Save" and you now have a new album.

I hope this works for you.

I actually looked at that option, but it doesn't seem like you can add new photos to the album that way, only add existing photos from your pictures already uploaded. But yes, you can add an album first if you want.

Damn. Well, it is Ning after all. They seem really ingenious at finding ways in which you can't do something.
