2011 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge

We are pleased to announce the 2011 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge!

The contest begins immediately. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2011. A winner will be announced the first part of January, 2012.

Unlike previous contests, there is no theme this time. It is simply Cigar Box Guitars. Note that any stringed instrument will qualify as a "guitar", so you can make a uke, dulcimer, lap steel, bass, whatever stringed instrument suits your fancy.

We will have some great prizes too, more to follow...

Contest Rules:

Each submission shall be an instrument of the builder's own construction and overall design.

The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design.

Each builder will submit up to five pictures of their creation.

Entries must be submitted no later than December 31, 2011.

Builders will post the pictures of their instruments in the "Contest Submission Thread."

Builders should include descriptions of their work, including any technical details such as features, materials used, or any other information they feel would assist the judges in reviewing the submission.

A panel of judges will review the pictures and select a winner.

The decision of the judges is final.

*** 11/20/11: Please limit your entries to one submission per person. ***

Suppose the original box contained pipes or cigarillos?  What about loose tobacco?  What if the box was originally used for something else, but held cigars at some point in its existance?  What if you are diametrically opposed to the legalization and distribution of tobacco and other addictive substances?

(I keed... I keed)

So the box does not have to be a cigar box. You could use a wine box, but it is up to you as to how you will prominently "feature a cigar box" in their design.

I know where you live, don't make me come over there....

I'm quite surprised that with this and other competitions in the past you only need to send pictures in and no sound clips or video of what it sounds like.

Isn't the sound the whole point?? I know some of the things people build on here are works of art, but shouldn't they sound good too??...maybe it's just me. Rant over, lol!

I want to enter too. I just made a one string cigar box diddley bow, and I am hooked!

i'm with bemuzic, theres no point in building a guitar to look at, it better play and sound good to be contest worthy

No, it does not have to be a new build, though we certainly encourage folks to build new instruments.

Can I duct tape a cigar box to a 1959 Gibson Les Paul?  Would that qualify?

So is this how you enter? The best one Ive built so far out of a cigar box.

Put any of your photos in the other thread. I am trying to keep all the contest photos in the same thread.

It plays and sounds great electric or acoustic. Ive already sold it so I cant make a video of it.
