Boxes for fiddles - modifying, reinforcing, bass bars and soundposts
I've seen a few ways of modifying the dimensions of a box to be narrow enough in the playing zone so the bow does not clip the box. If you're lucky, you can get a 4.5" box.
The fella at Carolina Fiddle uses a short box keeps the box below the playing zone.
A builder friend of mine cut a waist in the center of both sides and steamed some wood to fit the curve. I'll try to get a link to some of his images.
I'm slicing the top corners off my boxes just now. We'll have to see how that works.

Have you thought about making your own box, or do you think that would be cheating.

My CBF is made with a neck from a fiddle.
I have made a practice fiddle before, a hard thing to make would be the fingerboard.

I'd make my own box, but I'd have to hone my carpentry skills a bit first. I think the booze box is a great idea, and it is time to befriend my local wine merchant.
I see a few on ebay, but I'd rather buy in person so you can tap them and whatever.
As far as fingerboards, I'm starting out with readymade ones off ebay. Same with chinrests. Those parts don't look like much fun to make, I'd rather give the man the money.
