I was wondering about the lip that is on the inside the box. Is this taken out or left in?

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,  I take them out and use the wood for other things. Its not needed for the guitar it was there to help seal the box for cigar storage, structurally it does nothing. Less mass inside the box makes a better sounding guitar. Nice box, good luck with it.
Thank you for the reply. I was leaning in that direction but wanted to make sure.

I was also wondering about this and was going to glue them in, but if less mass makes a better sounding guitar will lean in that direction too... (-;

.

And I go the other way, I leave them in and glue them in place. I think they help keep the lid from shifting side to side. But either way works.

This is the best thing about cigar box guitars - there are no rules!  Both taking them out and leaving them in will work - benefits each way. My recommendation - build one of each and see what you like best. Personally, I've been taking them out but every once in a while I have had to glue a wood block back in later to prevent lid shifting - especially if the hinges aren't aligned too well.

Don't put your lips inside the box. It will make them red and girls won't want to kiss you.

Sorry, but I couldn't resist although I probably should have done.

Hello Doug...I take em out but if you leave in you should glue them in place so they don't rattle or fall out inside the box...

I also use them for various thing's in my builds such as shims....

Thanks for all the ideas and the great humor.
Like Jon says, I also have had some problems with the high quality hinges that are found on cigar boxes. Again, it is personal preference. I have noticed that sometimes if I glue them in, I might have to trim one of more of the pieces if the lid does not sit down correctly, but this only every once in a while.
John M is right I wouldn't put my lips inside the box, I also find the girls tend to like them on the outside better...Good point John...lol...
Take them out and save them, that way if your wife gives you any lip about all the cigar box's laying around you can give her some back. ha
