I'm in Sydney Mark - maybe I should have pointed that out (eep) There used to be one near me but he's gotten a touch strange in that there's no scrap scrounging anymore and if you want to buy a length for a neck you have to buy enough to make a dozen.
Hi Carl...I get some supplies from Bunnings, some of their hardwood is not eucalypt, it is oak..(but the gum is pretty good as long as you watch out for the fingered joined timber) I also get some surprises from "mens sheds".some Also find it usefull to laminate some of my necks because of the sizes at hand..I am in Melbourne. We do have some suppliers closer by, but very expensive. Best of luck....and a very happy cigar boxing time over Christmas.
My local Bunnings (Minchinbury) are as useless as an ashtray on a motorbike - you walk in head to the timber section get the sales boofhead to point you in the general direction of the hardwoods and you end up at stacks of MDF. I got the hump one day there and asked to speak to someone with a tad more intelligence than the sales man I was talking to, only to be told by the higher up they don't stock hardwood - I just walked out in disgust.
Might have to try Men's Sheds, can't hurt that's for sure.
And a happy Cigar Boxing time to you too.
LOL With a name like Taff Evans I could have swore you would have some Welsh in you.
Diolch, or Thanks take your pick ;-)
Hi Greg,
There's a Men's Shed listed as being right near me, so as soon as I get a spare hour I'll suss it out, I could in all honesty do with learning more skills when it comes to timber work, it's a great way to release the tension of hours in a studio listening (or pretending to atleast) idiot engineers who think they know more about something I've composed than I do.
Cheers..
Keep an eye on sites like gum tree and it's like, demolition lots, hardwood flooring etc.I'm in Perth, and just about every old shed being demolished is good seasoned jarrah, the sizes for necks, are usually cheap or free,i recently got around 40 metres of 100x50 for a bottle of rum,a few nails etc,but cleans up nice
Darryl,
Dunno what Perth is like for H&S but NSW is bloody hopeless - the slightest sniff of an old building like a shed or garage coming down they're all over it like a rash. The house across the street had a garage that was being demolished to make way for a granny flat and I spoke to the owner and he told me straight I could have the lot if it was up to him but H&S were in charge so no one can go near it while it's being pulled down because of the possibility of asbestos so all panels and timber etc had to be professionally wrapped and sealed.
I can accept the roofing and panelling but the timber? The nanny state strikes again.
