How about the pedal used in Spirit In The Sky? Norman Greenbaum.
some of the time I have a vague idea of a sound in my head I need to find, but mostly I find it by trying out different guitars, amps, pedals and effects - easy recording but playing live everything has to be simplified and compromised. Too much distortion pisses audiences off, most like clean organic sounds, I'm partial to 60's and 70's style of distortion naturally - but have fun and let us know if you find "it" ;-)
Here's an interesting article on the history of fuzz. Link Wray was the first one to poke holes in his speakers.

Thanks for the link Skeesix. Saved it and will read when I can.
AWESOME insane Guitars The anonymous pick! Bet you could overdrive the front end of an amp if you ran them all at the same time. Totally cool.
Slowpaw. The horror of two much of a good thing. Jammed with a guy who had an original 1970's Big Muff. He loved to run this thing wide open. Everything. Volume, tone and Sustain. Sounded like water running into a metal sink. It's amazing how many guitar players think more distortion makes it better. Perhaps playing by yourself. But in a band? You get mud. Even in heavy metal and thrash you need definition.
Tried my home made dead battery box on a few more pedals.
Crunchy Frog. Yaaa. this thing got nasty. I like it. Not the sound I'm after for this particular song. But different enough to add a coolness to another.
Tube screamer and Sparkle drive. When the dead battery sim was turned down enough to start any sag the pedals turned off. Not a good thing.
Daddy-O. You know you got a really cheezy box when it doesn't sound any different. It might add a bit more crunch. Not enough to make any difference.
Dirty Little Secret. It added a bit more crunch but not enough to be real noticeable. By itself it sounded good. But like the other two upper end dirt boxes, Wiio and Tweed 57, never reaching a point where they get nasty. When the power gets really low the pedals die out.
The hunt for that farting, mangy, rabid animal sound is still ongoing.
I should state, that farting rabid mangy animal sound I can reproduce when playing live is still being sought. Poking holes in a speaker is going to be a lot of fun. But not something I'd be willing to do in front of a crowd of people.
Great guys, now I have a picture in my head of a patchy furred racoon foaming at the mouth with a noxious cloud coming from it's backside bashing on a guitar as a logo on a distortion box and the label under it, "The Brown Sound".
As long as it has the sound I don't care what it looks like! : ) But that would make a great logo.
Skeesix, read the pages. Totally cool article! Listened to most of the music listed. Think the bass part is the best part of the country song. : )
Don't know how I did it but I forgot two dirt boxes.
Mesa Boogie V-twin.
This one has it's own 24 volt power supply so I know I wont be able to use the dead battery sim. It's also on the fritz at the moment. Haven't looked at it to see what's up. Hoping it's just dusty. Same thing happened to my POG2. They were kept side by side. Was able to get it working again with contact cleaner and canned air.
VOX Big Ben Distortion. This all tube distortion is really smooth. Tried it with the dead battery sim. and got it to shut off quickly. Guessing it's tube drains a lot of power quickly.
The only thing I haven't tried it with yet is the Soul Food. Be something to look forward tomorrow.
Thanks for the info Oily!
Now ya'll got me thinking about logos.
Picture the back half of a Raccoon leaving a gift on a pile of ripped up trash. His head turned and facing you with a larger than life grin. The caption above
"Your trash is GOOD!
Below
Recycled parts Guitars.
You know you would NEVER forget that label. : )
Tried the Soul Food with my dead batter sim. No good. Like the Sparkle drive and Tube screamer it died quickly.
The 70's and Crunchy frog are real close in sound when power starved. If I had to choose between the two it would have to come down to a practical choice. Of the two pedals, which one am I using for other songs in a live set.
Proco has come out with a new Rat pedal. The FatRat.

At $199 it's not new and improved enough to be worth it. But that's my ears. My opinion would be to use an eq after a rat to get a fatter sound. You can catch a vintage Rat for a bit more and have something way better. But again, that's my opinion. Your ears are your best friend.
What do you think about a couple of caps and resistors in the "gift" to go along with the Recycled Parts Guitars theme?
I think that'd be awesome Robert. Maybe a pickup and tuners as well.
Got me a Boss DS-1. Should be getting hear next Thurs. Looking forward to seeing what I can make this box do. How well I can work with it. And like the other boxes, how it's sound will inspire me. I know i haven't go many songs uploaded. I think only have one. Really do need to correct that.
