I ran across this amp kit today and thought I'd pass it along. They use a TEA2025B Amplifier IC which is rated at about 5 watts @ 9 volts. This amp is designed to use a 9VDC wall wart due to the higher power however it could be modified to run on batteries (about 2 watts) simply using 4AA (6V) batteries. Just stuff it in any box or tin you have laying around. Maybe a little pricey at $29.95 but its a complete kit including speaker, input and power jacks, switch, volume pot and knob. I've bought kits from these folks before and they make nice kits.
