Greetings all.

I am wanting to build my first cbg, but am not sure which direction to go.

The first box I am wanting to do is a black Cohiba.

I want to do a chrome on black.

Not sure which route to go though...

Trying to decide between a telecaster style - bridge plate, humbucker, with control plate, full size tele style neck OR more of a gibson style combo - melody maker wrap around bridge, humbucker, full size les paul style neck

I do plan on making it a solid body style.

Any thoughts or advice?

I am an experienced guitar player and have put together a couple guitar kits (full size, not cbg), but not made one on my own yet.

THANKS!!!

oh dear ,well you seem to know what you want, you have given yourself a choice of two . two is not a big number, why not make two but a hybrid of each other, you can easy get all the hardware on the net,

just my 2 penn'orth

Brandon,

If this is your first stringed instrument build, why not save your best boxes for later?

Now, I'm assuming you are not an already accomplished luthier, nor a master woodworker, nor even a successful kit builder. I'm assuming you are an "average Joe". So, I'm sure there will be plenty to learn and a lot to go wrong on you first few builds. I'd start with an acoustic build to see how the neck attaches to the body, as well a how to build a headstock, fret a neck, etc, etc. Then try an electric. I generally try to build as much of the instrument as I can myself. But another option if you need such a high degree of instant gratification is to buy the head/neck from another builder and add that to a cigar box, or perhaps buy and build a cigar box kit. I just don't want to see you set yourself up for failure, nor experience the mental anguish of that, by setting your goals too high. Chances are your first build will turn out nice, and sound good to boot, but many of the great instruments you've seen here on CBN have been built by guys (and gal) who have already built a bunch (often dozens) of other CBG and similar instruments.

P.S. After re-reading your post, I see you have built a few kits, so you can ignore my advice if you like. But, I'll keep my original comment posted here for other "newbies" to read and consider...

Sincerely,

-Rand.

Ain't neither o these idea as ambitious as ppl think. Slab inside a box and go for it. They both bridges got adjusting stein height therefore pretty easy just go for it. Fuq the naysayers an know it alls of course you can do it. It's a bolt on electric for goodness sake.

Thanks for the replies...

I know the ideas I have can be done and have been done, it is just a matter of style. That is basically what I was after.

I already have made both necks I referred to in the initial post, I just can't decide which way to go with it.

I guess also making sure that, if I go the telecaster style, the control plate will have enough room and won't have to be placed in an awkward position. The black Cohiba box I have might be a tad too small for the telecaster bridge plate and control plate, along with needing to bolt the neck on.

If I am needing to add an extra piece of wood to give it a bit more length, should I go neck side or bridge side?

Not sure which would look better and provide more stability.

Thanks!

Just ot be a fence sitter, i say make both. Go woth the one you think will be easier first. After your finished you'll want to make another one anyway, so you'll be set! IMO the gibson set up is a little more compact and easier (just my opinion). Start there!
