It would be a sad crying shame if there could only be ONE musical instrument.

But, if there was only one -   and if I had to choose it  - it would be a 3 stringer.

People, they sound so good, they are so versatile and so easy to play.

And it is the one instrument that I can play at an above mediocre level.   Better yet, I can make my own AND play it.

Six strings is three strings too many!
I love playing three stringers. They force me to play and write in a different style. I always had trouble playing solos and improvising on a six string. On a three string, I can find the notes a lot easier. It frees me up to be creative. It's just so much fun to play!
Lots of people play CBGs with 4, 5, or 6 strings, ands that's great. Many post videos and they sound great. Don't mean any disrespect to anyone.
I just love my three stringers!

I hear you there John! 3 strings are by far the majority of what I've made so far. Easy to play, they sound good and they're great for exceeding people's expectations! ("3 strings? What can you play on that?!"). I do love 4 strings too, although I play them in a very different way (more chordy-singalong etc).

Every home should have one (or 3) :)

Thanks for the words, guys.

Muddy, I agree.  No disrespect intended for any # of strings.   And if I could play the crap out of 4s and 6s, I would be a bigger fan.   I prefer 3s because they are what I do best in both playing and building.  And they just seem so classic to the genre.   I play a bunch of stuff at mid to almost mid level:  standard guitars, mandolins, ukes, harmonica, and tin whistle.   Like em all.   Not a lot of talent, but a fair amount of like to.

Hi John, well said. I haven't built almost a year because of personal issues, but I can still play, and I just got out my Lonman license plate 3 stringer yesterday and it was so fun. Best wishes and hope you are doing well.

I do.

What about the 2 1/2 string.

LOL, Judge RTZ.   Multiple choice question--

You will be:  A. Happy.   B. Unhappy or C. Not-give-a-chit

that I have been playing six string more lately and just came in from the shop after electrifying one.

It rocks, my friend.   Me?  Not so much.

You gotta play Linda some sweet six string John. I want tell anyone. It will help your 4 and 3 string playing does for me.

She plays better six than I do!

I am going to order some from Gitty after my next payday.

I've noticed since I built my 4 string is that it's not that different to playing a 6. You're approach, regardless of the tuning is more or less the same. A 3 string however is a different beast all together.

I like playing them all.

Me too, Patrick, liking playing them all.   Just today alone I played a 3 string, a concert uke, a mandolin and a six string.   I sound like me no matter what I am playing.    I just sound a little better on the 3.
