I think a lot about different seasons that happen each year.  (After doing music professionally for five years, I've noticed a trend.)  These are very different than Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.  For me they're more like:

Songwriting Season
Festival Guitar Building Season
Festival
Season
Holiday Season
and so forth...

Right now, festivals are over and everything is less in demand.  Things slow down and allow me to catch my breath.  This is when I plan concerts for Fall/Winter.  I also analyze everything from the past few months (our concert theatrics and songs, which merch you guys liked the best and so forth).

This is also the time when I can get creative in the woodshop and build radical cigar box guitars.  Here's one I call 'The Electric Frankenstein.'  It has a massive cigar box for a body, a 1936 New York license plate resonator, antique yardstick fretboard and a gnarly chrome foil pickup:

Festival Guitar Building Season demands that I create the same style of "tried-and-true" guitar in bigger quantities to meet demand... but this slower Post-Fest time is all about dreaming up new creations.  Something a little wilder and weirder.

As an artist, I crave this time of year.  Swimming in the pools of creativity recharges my batteries and gives meaning to my art.  It allows me to explore new ideas and invent new instruments.  It also allows me to broaden myself in new ways, giving new life to my work.

Have you noticed certain predictable seasons in your life?  If so, look forward to them and plan ahead to make them more vibrant and productive.

Oh... and remember to stay primal,
Shane Speal

PS. These are one of the many new cigar box guitars I've just added to the Shane Speal Online Store.  Check them all out here
