The critical point is making the taper of the peg and the hole exactly the same. This can be quite tricky by hand (although that's how i did my first couple) but you can get specially shaped reamers and peg sharpeners... but they can be a bit pricey. But hey the old guys up in the mountains did it with a bowie knife... have fun.
