Just found this the other day. With it you can pre-drill just a little under size then get the taper for a good tight fit.

Usually avoid Harbor Freight tools, but if you stick to hardwoods this baby should last quite a while

I was thinking, "Why not just drill it?"   But for $ 2.99, that is a cool tool.
