This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

NOTE TO STEVE FLYN___ hey man, you mention din one of your questions about 'what size/kind of box...regarding string tension' -- mostly not an issue, you coould use the lightest paper box if you wanted --the way these are mostly built, the neck runs all the way through tuners/nut/bridge all attached to one piece of wood --- so all the tension is on that one strip with the box glued/screwed etc.. as a sound board and to make it more than a strip of wood. I used a VERY VERY light basswood box for my first. Practically paper-weight plywood top and back -- but it's glued (and screwed in my fancy way) to the 'neck-through' board. i swear the light box is an amazing sound board...the thing RINGS clear and strong. So just make a nice stiff, straight neck, make tight fitting cuts, glue and clamp it, then play with different nut and bridge heights to dial in a you favorite action. at first my bridge was too low and the nut too high, then I switched them out with different bolts and the thing came alive.

Hey Gog! what I still can't quite believe is how legit a homemade cobbled 'junk-drawer' hardware instrument can be. I'd thought for the last five or so years about taking a board and using screws as tuners etc for n experimental project... never was pressing since I had no idea how successfull it'd be...then recently found the CBG nation, and got the nerve --- and was floored by how my first turned out...made few tweaks to the nut and bridge bolts and BAM the thing RINGS and sounds fully legit. This site is a real joy to belong to and I love the idea that I'll be able to make cool custom funky and fully recordable instruments out of nearly anything whenever the mood strikes!...

Failte (pronounced "fall-chuh), Alan. My condolences on your loss of Sweet Lou. Us Mariner fans miss him something fierce. Hopefully your fortunes won't be as dreadful as ours when he leaves you (worst in AL a couple years in a row and still swimming around face down in the toilet).

Glad to have you along. Try to find a few groups to join in. It'll improve the community and make you a better builder and player, all at the same time.

Hey folks! My name is Alan Hawkins and I live in the Wrigleyville area of Chicago (Go Cubs!)(Yes, I know. The last two years have been bad. No one knows it better than us...)

I built my first CBG from links to and on this site. It was very helpful and even though I had a total lack of experience, tools and know how my first project came out great!

hey, everyone. I've been playing guitar for about 18 years, and saw these funky, hand-made instruments at my hometown's annual festival last year. I had the dude send me an email with some pics, then realized... hey, I can do this myself! (I also build guitar effects, so the DIY in me took over lol).

Started Googlin' some research, and 2 CBG's later, here I am.

I am in the process of building a house, but as soon as that's done, and I'm settled in, I'm starting my next build - a resonator built around a Tabasco Chocolate tin (yes... Tabasco Chocolate... and it was delicious lol).

Just starting out and need to know about proper fret placement, I plan on building a 3 string and a uke. Any help is appreciated. Also what is the nut??
Comment by Eric Townsend on August 24, 2010 at 2:33pm
Hey Danny, definitely look at a bunch of people's builds on the site to get ideas and a clue -- and just build yours with tightly glued/clamped joints, and make sure you have sharp string break-angles over the nut and the bridge so there's good string tension...(make string retainers if you need to)...the rest is gravy... and worst case? You have a nice wall piece, and you can try to fix any iffyness on the next build.... ET
