After drilling the tuner holes on my latest project, I think it would look better with the tuners backwards - meaning the post is pulling away from the gear under string tension. Is this a bad idea considering the forces of nylon strings or should I put durability over my preference of how it looks? The tuners are fairly low end without a steel bushing so they are probably worst case for this "technique".

Probably a bad idea. The knobs on the tuners need to be above the posts. There are a couple of reasons for that. #1 is that is how the tuner is built to operate best. The second reason is that your left hand will probably be resting against the tuner knob when fretting on the first fret. It becomes uncomfortable very fast.
Thanks Gary, didn't even think about my hand hitting them. I have pretty much talked myself down after looking at it again today, I want a playable instrument so I just need to deal with it. I have a couple sets of tuners to work with and will just have to pick one and say I meant to do that!
I have been there. we all learn from experience. The tuner winder knob position is particularly critical on ukes due to the smaller fret spacing.
