Hi dear cbg-bass addicts! Iwant to add some ideas and experience I got AS a cbg builder.
The strings: after some googling around, I decided for Weedwhacker strings. Watch out: of you look in e-bay aso you will Fall for far to high prices. Look at home stores, they sell replacement packages for which I paid here in Switzerland about 9 dollars for 9 meters. You will geht equal to 10 basses! There are different diameters in different flashing colours. Look for the rund profile. They play great and are perfect for slapping too.
Neck: since bass strings result in heavy pull, I recommend 'sandwich' build, mixed woods with hardwoods, too.
Fretless plays best, its easier and cheaper to build, makes less sidenoises with a piezo. The fingers glide great directly on the neck and you get a precise touch.
Hope that will hell, if neededlease shoot
:-))

One issue that puts off WeedWacker players is that amount of time it takes to get them played it. I've found considerable stretch over 2 weeks or 10 hours of play. I've had so much stretch that I had to recut for length. BUT, after trimmer line has settled in, they can be stable for months.... unless of course if you don't put them in a hot car in summer...
The other of course being, if you use nylon strings, you can't use a magnetic pickup. Obvious for some, not obvious for all, I had a guy bring in his Spanish guitar complaining the soundhole pickup we sold him didn't work. I like piezo because they're cheap and easy, but they do pick up more surface noise, bridge tapping etc. Which you can use to your advantage.
a lil trick for this is , you can take the lil springs out on a click pen , and slip them onto the weed wacker strings over the area the pick up is . ;-)
