I'm going to make Dog Bowl reso , the box is 2in deep inside so I've made the neck double thickness inside the box so it fits snug in the box , I've notched the top of the neck inside the box so the lid is free to vibrate , and cut out where the dog bowl is, I don't know what to do with the bottom of the neck inside of the box glue it to the base to make it stronger or just glue it on the ends and notch the rest a 1/8in so it's free to vibrate like the lid, so the question is does the base of the box play any part in the sound of the box , thanks for reading .

Gluing the neck to the inside bottom of the box may be overkill. I suppose it could affect the sound, but remember, the bottom of the box is usually dampened by/resting against the player's body anyway, so I doubt that it would make much difference. I think I would just glue it at the ends, though.
There`s one way you can still get sound from the bottom , do a false back. It`s just a double bottom. I`ve done a few builds and the sound is great. More so when the thru neck is attached to the bottom of the box. I just use 1/2" wood spacers glued at the corners and spaced around the 4 edges, then use a 1/4" piece of cabinet plywood glued on the spacers. That dampened sound that usually comes from holding the build against your body is gone.
That's a great idea, Randy. A bit like a resonator within a resonator. I'd like to try that.
It`s an old mountain dulcimer design, that type of instrument has the same problem of the dampening sound from the body laying on the players lap. Having the false bottom is one way around that. True it`s not for every build but for an acoustic one the sound is great. Try it Max you'll like it.
That makes lots of sense... esp. concerning the origin of that design. But, just to clarify, when attaching a through-neck to this type of build, ...are you talking about gluing it to the actual bottom (back) of the box, or to the false back? I do see that you have the heel attached to the false back...I will try it!
The neck thru gets attached to the bottom of the box, the false bottom is a separate part of the build. So there`s an air space between the actual box bottom and the false bottom. Another option on the neck thru where it attaches to the box bottom is to cut it back an 1/8" letting it touch at the front and back an inch or so, this will allow the bottom to still vibrate.
Oh yeah. That's what I figured. I like that 2nd option too.
Man, I'll bet you were standing in a huge pile of woodchips/shavings after you finished this one. That's some serious carving!
Yeah...lol, that build has some serious carving time in it. It really projects a sound too, has a mando type sound.
http://www.cigarboxnation.com/video/taken-a-break-in-the-shop Max here`s what it sounds like, pure acoustic !!
Wow. That little thing sure does project. ... And with a capo, even!
I've notched the bottom of the neck the same as the top inside the box and i'll screw through from the base to secure it ,
The necks fretted and finished , dog bowls fitted to top , just need to cut sound holes and sort out the pickup , that's the next question , I can't decide , keep it simple with a disc piezo or use a rod piezo bridge the same as my other builds , if I go for the disc piezo where's the best place to position it ? .
