Uncle Gus: Hot Corn Pone (Front Porch Music 07-26-2012)

HOT CORN PONE
=============
Keep that corn pone coming, now baby
Keep that skillet hot
Keep that corn pone coming, now baby
Keep that skillet hot
We got no money in our passbook savings
But there's turnip greens in the pot

My baby makes hot corn pone
And I love her johnnycakes
My baby makes hot corn pone
And I love her johnnycakes
And when she's cooking up a mess of fritters
It's more than I can take

My baby keeps bacon drippins
In an old blue Mason jar
My baby keeps bacon drippins
In an old blue Mason jar
And when she's cooking up a mess of chicken
The men come from near and far

But my baby makes hot corn pone
And it ain't for nobody else
My baby makes hot corn pone
And it ain't for nobody else
She keeps that old iron skillet real busy
And I keep her for myself

Sounds Great!... corn popping good stuff

Thanx, recent commenters. I seem to write about food more often than would be statistically probable. The great thing about the blues, though, is that it makes everything sound naughtier than it is, so nobody ever thinks, "No, he literally wrote a song about cornbread." I finished a deluxe recording of this the other day with 2 homemade guitars and some really janky percussion.

eK: I was thinking "greasy," but "snarly" is good, too. Thx!

Nice tune and performance. Real down & snarly blues. Makin' me hungry for more!

Great song.  Great performance.  Sounds right out of the 1930s.  Double entendres were and are a fun and traditional part of blues.   Thanks for the lyrics.

WM: That would probably be the one..."Electricity" is a bit fluid, vocal-wise. There are some things I just can not sing and play at the same time...you know "Come As You Are" by Nirvana and "Meantime" by Helmet? I couldn't do 'em when I was 15, and I still can't at 35 (not that those would be even remotely high on my list of Songs To Play For People today; it just still strikes me as odd).

Thank you all kindly.

Hound: yep. Everything I've posted so far is original, although I've been trying to work on a few covers. "Electricity" or "Sure 'Nuff n' Yes I Do" by Beefheart, maybe some White Stripes or Tom Waits.
