Once I discovered the open G tuning, I had to build a cigar box guitar to try to sound like Keith. Here's part 1 of what I hope will be a series following the building process.

Thanks Ed and Uncle John.   I'm glad to have possibly sparked something for you.  You are right on with the old drinking buddy comparison, Ed.  I was born and raised on classic rock and the Stones are like comfort food for me.  This is my first time around really learning the songs, but they're so ingrained at this point, they come almost naturally.  The most fun I've had playing in a long time.

And Ed - If you know where I can find a blues playing girlfriend with a stash of vintage Srats, let me know would ya?

Thanks for a terrific vid. Inspirational too! I had completely forgotten about open-G tuning. After watching your clip a few times I was inspired to haul out this nice 76 Strat my GF owns and tune it to open G. I haven't had that much fun in years. Almost like running into an old school chum and going out for some serious drinking. The only reason I eventually stopped playing was because the blister on my thumb finally broke and it just got too painful to continue. Even my blues-playing GF thought it was pretty neat.

Unfortunately, I'm now thinking about doing my own 5-string build...which I really don't have the time for. Oh well. Gotta take the bad with the good I suppose.

So again, thanks for a very instructional and inspirational video. Even if I don't follow in your footsteps, I got back something from my musical past I had forgotten about.

Dang.  You make me want to try some Stones again.  Cool idea and video.

Thanks for the comments Mark.  I agree that you could get away with the 4 stringer for much of what Keith does and I think the final decision will come down to how strong I feel the neck is when its done.  My other consideration is the placement of the tuners on this odd shaped headstock.

Good idea on the pickup placement - I'll have to look again at his main telecaster and see exactly what setup he has going.  I was leaning toward one pickup in a mid position but you've got me thinking.

Some interesting stuff in that vid. I'll be keen to see how the finished guitar works out.

I've found that a 4-string tuned G-D-G-B isn't bad for doing simple Keef impersonations (being as it's the lowest four strings from his tuning) - worth bearing in mind if the 5-string plan runs into any snags with neck strength. However my bet is you'll be OK as long as the neck isn't too slim (I've come across 6-string electric guitars with plain wooden no-trussrod necks that seemed fine).

Another point to bear in mind if you really want the full Keef tone is pickup positioning. It's worth looking at whether you can fit pickups in approximately the same positions as those on a telecaster
