It's amazing for the price - plays well plugged in too now I've found a decent amp setting. Looking quite good now, though I say so myself, with a paper overlay on the sound box and the fret markers burned into the neck with a soldering iron. Sticking to three strings at the moment, once I get on top of that I might try four!

Keen to make a couple, etc more too. Fancy one built around a license plate want to have a go at frets as well. Our 10 year old is learning double bass so I'd also like to make something for him to jam along on.

Going to Boxstock, did look at Cambridge too but not sure we'll fit that in. Also doing CBJ's workshop next weekend in Brum.

Thanks for the welcome - didn't realise there were Frisbys in Lincolnshire too, thought it was a Leicestershire thing. Tomorrow the world...

My guitar is a 3 stringer that I built in Chickenbone John's workshop session in Barnsley the other weekend. I already have a few other ideas I want to try out though so I guess I'm well and truly hooked!

Hi Russell, cheers for the advice mate, all much appreciated .. Im starting to make my 2nd 3 stringer on the weekend, the 1st looked great but when tuned to DAD only tuned up down to the 5th fret the anything down to 12 was out and sounded bad. What do you think of me taking all my measurements from my new 4 stringer and using those as a template ..? would it work better.

best wishes JC

Cheers dude, just let me know of any Cigar box gigs London way or if theres's a building workshop on a weekend anywhere in the country I think I'd head there at the moment as I've bought 1, and just back now from doing the first open mic where I've played it with my basist and drummer, but I really want to make my own at some point soon.

Thanks for the warm welcome, much appreciated. Haven't had time to even scratch the surface of the information mine on here yet but what I've seen so far makes me think I could be spending quite a bit of time here. Very friendly people with a great wealth of knowledge and a fantastic array of instruments. Glad to be here.

lol, no I haven't tried to play a fretless uke! I imagine it must be difficult. :D

by scale you mean like 12" or 17" or whatever? YEs I have to measure just to make sure but it should be the same scale.

Oh, no I'm not fretting my instrument, I'm simply removing the bridge off the old uke to the new one and taking the neck off the old uke and transferring it to the new uke.

Wow, I sound so ridiculously amateur for asking this but: "Why should I measure the distance? Is there a big difference between measuring and not measuring? Does it even matter?" :) See the ridiculousness now? Thanks,

George

Oh yeah, I hadn't thought about putting a block of wood in to attach the neck. I'm just now in the process of taking the neck off my old Diamond Head cheapie uke.

...sounds great though, didn't think it was possible to make a cigarbox bass!

Hey Yellowbelly! I've always wanted to play an 8 string, they seem fun! Thanks for the comment and welcome! The fact the your bass's neck goes through the cigar box, not just to it would definitely help with the tension. Do you use nylon or regular old steel strings? That sounds
