Hi LJ - my canjo really isnt braced at all. The neck goes through the body and butts up against the side of the tin - rounded to fit snugly. The part of the neck inside the tin is ground away except for a half inch ledge. The top vibrates freely. I have a screw that goes through the tailpiece then tin and then into the end of the "neck". The tin that was cut to fit the neck is folded into the tin body and screwed top and bottom to the neck. There is one screw that goes through the top of the face of the canjo and into the shelf portion of the neck. The can lid for me is on the backside. I put a couple of rubber bands around the rim and pushed the lid on. I used a screwdriver to push the rubber under the rim. The lid provides a lot of structural strength. If you take the lid off and try for an open pot style - the canjo goes out of tune and the pressure of the strings push it out of round. I get a lot of volume out of this build - more than my cbg. Amplified it is several times louder than my cbg with the same radio shack piezo, but the sound degrades when you push the volume as it's built in reverb overwhelms the sound. I have done some work on both builds and may post some video soon.

Hi L.J.! Thanks for the reminder of the voting in the challenge for Unusual Guitars. That is definitely a good crop of instruments. I did get to vote this past weekend. I had a hard time figuring out what many were actually made of. Most reminded me of the "steam punk" movement or something you would see in "A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." I guess that, here, we do have a "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," after all!

When you set up your membership you somehow selected notification option to receive emails for each post. This is OK for a slow forum where there might be 2-3 posts a day. You can go back into your membership by clicking on "My Groups" at the upper left. Then on the next page click the tab "Edit My Groups"... The third column right to left is "Message Delivery" The drop down menu will offer "individual emails'..."Daily Digest"...."Special Notices".... and "No email"..... Most guys will pick "Daily Digest" so that you get a summary of the last day's activity.... That should solve your email problem.

Please don't worry about offending anyone. Just wanted to help out if there was something wrong. The Builders Forum and the Nation have a lot of folks who are members of both.

Hope this helps....

the best,

Sam

Hi LJ,

In your post re: unusual build challenge, you mentioned that you were 'uncomfortable" at the Builder's Forum.... Has something gone wrong or is there a problem we need to address? I'm a mod. over there and would hate to see anyone uncomfortable... Let me know... or, give me a call and we'll talk.... 316.655.0423...

the best,

Wichita Sam

Oh, BTW, you can play CBG in my church anyday....

For slide to fit your fingers what I found was this 2 sided tape which is about 1/16 of a inch thick. I stuck it inside but did not remove the outer cover so tah it doesn't stick to my fingers. You find that at any hardware store.

Thanks man. You've got a nice collection yourself. Y

Yeah, websites can get pretty expensive. Much like these guitars, the higher the level of craftsmanship, the more time and money they take to build. Our typical project at work takes between 400 - 1000 man hours. A few of the guys at work do a decent amount of freelance though for small businesses, but that is still gonna cost close to $1000. They build really nice sites though. If you are ever interested I can recommend some folks to help you out.

Keep the guitars coming.
