I know that cigar boxes mean that generally, anyone with one is going to play 'the blues'. But everyone just ends up turning out the same thing to a better or worse degree. I'm not knocking people who want to learn and play and get enjoyment out of music, but, these instruments are much more capable and far more adaptable to so much more than the same three chord turnaround.

I know im a grumpy git, just wanted to get that off my chest.

Curmudgeon away Ralph...I've heard some stunning stuff turned out on cigar box guitars, and most often these are well outside the ambit of the familiar 3 chord 1-4-5 changes. One thing I've been increasingly aware of is that people come to Cigar Box Nation as a focus of interest, a place to exchange ideas and get information, which is great and as such, an invaluable resource, but there's an unsettling tendency for things to get a little self-congratulatory and self-indulgent. It can all get a bit internalised and "closed shop"...I like to get shaken-up and surprised every so often, exposed to new ideas...so I'm all for a bit of intelligent discussion and icnoclasticism.

It's all too easy to develop the "little fish in a big pond" syndrome...so being exposed to new and challenging stuff is all good in my opinion. I love to see people discovering that they can make music, often for the first time, especially on an instrument that they've made for themselves (although that can be bit of a mixed blessing in terms of it's listenability...and I suppose that's all subjective), and it's exciting to hear how far people can push the boundaries.
