Thanks for your comments fellow Nationals, the reason for the cruciform bridge was because I set the neck angle a little too steeply resulting in a high bridge but a spot on action. A home made banjo style bridge was my original intention but this proved to be a trifle unstable and was beginning to distort the 'top' of the tin.

So, the cruciform bridge. It is very stable and allows me to rest the edge of my wrist on the bridge, (my playing style) and the increased foot print alleviates the distortion on the tin. Now that the instrument has 'settled in' it remains in tune and sounds a bit like my Dobro,
