Hep me, hep me!

This 100 foot Sears & Roebuck measuring tape reel was my dad's. I used it today and it cranked (reeled in) way too stiff.
I want to preserve it in good working order to pass it on to one of my sons.

How can I make it crank more easily and make it last>?

Place on a solid and level surface.
Center the object in question.
Take a deep breath.
Smash with rubber mallet until fixed.
