The nut is a 1/8" cotter pin, cut to size and filed ends, glued in to a trough I cut with a miter saw and then filed in the notches for the strings.

Nope, those are cotter pins. 1/8" for the nut/zero fret and 3/32 for the others. Saw in a trough with a miter saw and glue the cotter pin in the ditch with a little crazy glue. It looks fine and plays well, but the frets do pop off now and again. So okay for home/family use but not if you'll be sending the instrument off into the universe.
