    Hi Wes
Well My Mic Squeals a bit too ...Nature of the Beast I suppose...
I'm Running it Str8 into a Fender Concert 60 W amp and can set it on about 3.
Decent volume... but there must be a way to shield the pup and decrease some feedback.
Let Me Know what you figure out.
    THANKS
    HI
  • David Garretson

    Hey Wes,

Thank you for the kind words, and offer to help me out. I am just getting geared up to make my first CBG, and any help would be great! I just moved to Greer about 3 months ago, and I am looking for a new project, so we will see how she goes! I was wondering, because you said you build and play, what books/dvds should I look into to learn about playing? I think I can get my build finished ok, (Hopefully), but I have no idea what to do after that. I played the 6 string in my younger days, mostly chords and scales, but I have never played slide or anything with 3 strings.

    Thanks
    Dave
  • David Garretson

    Hey Wes,

I hate to seem like a bother, but I can't seem to find any solid information about my build. What do you use as a rule for bridge/nut height? I have body guitar pretty much together, and plan on starting my build. I am using 25.5 scale from my telecaster, but I am stuck trying to figure out my bridge/nut height. I would appriciate any pointers you could give me.

    Thanks again,
    Dave
  • David Garretson

Do you have a preference in bridge/nut material???

    Thanks,
    Dave
  • Chris Ballard

Thanks Wes. Working on my second attempt now. I think I will replace the neck on my first attempt. I have the method down better now. I will post pics when it is done. This is a cool lil hobby. And cheaper than builing solidbody guitars.
  • R L Kuhn

Thanks Wes. Wes Carl has already contacted me. He'll let me know whenever he comes this way and/or when here permanently.
Not sure where Simpsonville is, near the coast? We have a rental condo in MB that we get down to occasionally if it's close.
    Love the name btw!
  • Fitzhugh

No problem. Just wondering, how much do you use linux for audio, if much at all, what distro and how you like it? Are you running real time, jack, etc. or not bothering with all that? That is all assuming you don't mind my asking!
    Thanks
  • Martin Johns

Hi, Wes.  Thanks for the welcome.  Should clear up immediately I "borrowed" that picture from a CD cover.  T'ain't me.  If that's a no-no, somebody should let me know and I'll shuffle in a picture of my cat or something.

Again.  Thanks for the welcome and the advise.  Just hangin' right now.

    Peace.

  • Martin Johns

That would be the Reverend K.M. Williams from the Dialtone Records release "When I Rise".  He plays a homemade single-string and his percussionist uses his hands, instead of drumsticks.

  • Glen Freck

Thanks for the welcome I used to live in fountin inn man its a small world

  • Keni Lee Burgess

Thank you Wes for your response. Definitely. Right on the money.

Guitars, especially standard tuned guitars, are not the best instrument for understanding how music works. Moving from string to string does not work out as nice as the notes on a piano keyboard. Your right, starting with a simple one string instrument is a great way to begin. Actually, a great deal of slide is played on the first string on a 6 string guitar too. The 2 bass strings (strings 6 and 4) are alternating and the melody line ( notes on string one) fall either on the bass note beat or in between them. The melody line is actually the lyrics set to music. Please watch this video:

     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A211hZFewdk

In a nutshell, this is the foundation of Delta Blues. If you get this down, it is easier to move into more complex arrangements and add additional strings. This arrangement can also be played on a 3 string CBG tuned 151 (GDg) Alternate G and D while playing slide on string g. Timing is key. Slow and steady.

    Enjoy, Keni Lee

  • Keni Lee Burgess

You know I should of told you, GDg is of course another key than the video. If you wanted to play it how it sounds in the video, you would need to tune DAD.

For GDg, I use strings ADg from a standard pack. (CD4)

To tune DAD, use EAD from a standard pack. (CD1)

    Enjoy.

  • Jon Pruett

Thanks for the tip on the Harbor Freight flush cut saw - that looks much nicer than my plastic handle model with the chipped teeth I need to replace anyway. Now I'm looking forward to a pull cut for fretting!   Thanks!
  • Jon Pruett

And oh yeah - not sure of your preferred Linux flavor, but I'm finding Mint Fluxbox edition rocks! Clean, simple, uncluttered and elegant - just like a  fine CBG!  :)
  • Jon Pruett

My main working unit is a TC1100 tablet and I had lots of display and wireless driver issues with both the RedHat and Suse distro's - but the Debian derivatives have all been pretty good with it. It's nice to poke around and put something new on it every few years too.
  • Mister Scott

Thanks for the link, Wes. I've been using my stock of pre-made necks since that fiasco. probably time to get back on the saddle.
  • Wichita Sam

    Wes,

Thanks for noticing.   I'm moving and downsizing.  This is going to be my moving sale dedicated page.... Then after, only Wichita Sam Custom CBG page... dedicated to the business of building only one quality custom per month.....

Look for a big banner ad when I kick off the Moving Sale....

    thanks,

    Sam

  • Mark Bliss

Thanks for the support and comments Wes.

I had seen your neck carving post, its also full of good tips. On longer necks I do use the marks as a guide, but on the little one in the blog I found it to be so simple, it was roughed in so quickly it was like surprise! Im nearly done here. I checked it with a straight edge for reference a couple of times, but it required vewry little tweaking.

The connundrum of the moment is finishing the blog build. My objective was to build the thing and present methods to build something different than the stick in a box method but with all common hand tools and easily available materials.

The problem is, I am down to the nut and bridge construction and really am having a hard time facing making them by hand. I want to do black, as it would contrast the white box and light colored neck nicely, and I have some black Corian samples, and a chunk of Ebony, but just want to machine them and finish this thing and move on to another.........

    Thanks again,

    Mark

  • Bluesheart

Yeah, me too. Well, hello again, as the song goes.
  • Bluesheart

I have used SO many of your building tips, all to good effect. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
  • Rob (Uker) Porras

    Nice Pics.
  • Bad Finger (Eric)

Thanks for the comment on my video. Yes, I think you got the lyrics correct!

  • Uncle John

Wes,  You and Chickenbone John have my favorite names on nation.  Is there a story about how your parents chose that name?
  • R L Kuhn

    Wes,

Saw "Blind Lemon Pledge" was playing here in Wilmington last night . Had to be you. (Or someone stole the best blues name ever!) Give me a heads-up next time, I'll catch ya.

  • Uncle John

Blues so bad your mule has to moan.   That's the blues.
  • Delbarjo

    Hi Wes.

Thanks for joining the Skype group. Hope to chat with you on there sometime if the time difference isn't too much of an obstacle.

    All the best.

  • Roadkill a.k.a. John Maw

Hi. Yes. I was up until almost 2am last night talking to Dan Sleep. Can't do that tonight as I have to get up early, but hope to link up soon.

    All the best

    That's a beautiful tatoo, Wes.

  • Palmettoflyer

Thanks for the warm SC welcome.  I'm just starting to figure out what all the CBG and 3 string playing is all about.  I might need some help for sure.  1st step is building a CBG!  Great resources here and I'm confident in my skills.  Might need more "learning to play" help than anything else.  I've played guitar off and on (mostly off) for the past 35 or so years.  Now it's time for some fun!
  • jabes

sorry to be thick, but your comment on 'marking your work'- what's a DBA?.. THANKS FOR YOU COMMENT...JOHN
  • Galen Lee Walker

Thanks for the welcome Wes. The fishin great round here, I'm more of a black bass guy. Love the area, been here 9 years. Take care.
  • hikingonthru

Thank-you!  Would love to know a source for a good set of plans to make a cardboard dulcimer.  My oldest son (in elem school) would like that to be our next project together.
  • Jerry L. Fields

If I should decide to take on another project I'll definetly get in touch. Thanks for the offer of help. My maiJn interest comes from watching a friend who lives in Easley who has built several they really look interesting and who can resist the quality of a handbuilt instrument even if it ends up as a display piece. I would give you his web address but he is not connected to the net Thanks Again Jerry
  • Skeet

Yea, I made em all myself.  I'm from North Augusta by the way.  I mostly just play in my man cave.  Sometimes I'll get with a band and play harp at their jam sessions.
  • Gabe Beilfuss

Pauls is still there and busy as ever.
