Blue, thanks for the support. These days it's refreshing to find that it is still possible to buy British, and I was really pleased when these companies agreed to supply me. The saws are exactly the same that StewMac in the USA sell, and the hammers are made 5 miles from my workshop.

Getting the fret rockers made was a good experience...they quoted me and made them within a week. It's another local firm, so when we collected them, we got a guided tour of the shop floor, and it was a combination of traditional "metal bashing", high tech robot welders and massive computer controlled laser cutting machines.

With guitar parts the market is flooded with Chinese and Korean stuff, some is excellent, other stuff is pure junk, but it's still possible to to source some parts from Europe, so for me, the cheapest, irrespective of where it comes from isn't the automatic choice.

John , Hats off to you for supporting British tools !

I have sold tools to industry for nearly 31 years and currently work for a well known International company. We are stockists of Thor too and I can vouch for the fact these hammers are a quality product made to last.

Here's the latest addition to our range of tools. It's an essential tool if you are making a fretted guitar. Also great for trouble-shooting guitars with fret buzzes. Simply place the rocker over three frets, and it's really easy to check to see if you've got a high fret that can be the cause of a nasty rattle or buzz. The length of the sides makes it easy to check all of the frets right the way up the fingerboard.

It really takes the guesswork out of identifying "rogue" frets that are often the main cause of buzzes and rattles on fretted instruments. Your workbench isn't complete without one!

I've just started stocking specialist luthier's tools. Here's the first two offerings, a fret slotting saw and a fretting hammer, both made in the UK.

If you are only going to buy one specialist guitar making tool, this is the one that you simply must have. A lot of people try to get by with a cheaper alternative, but this saw will outperform and outlast them, and be easier and more accurate in use.

Well, there's the problem.

The top turned out to be literally thick cardboard, which is probably why the finish is not that great.

Consequently, it sounds a bit dead.

The neck runs right through, & I've relieved it so it only touches the soundboard at the ends.

I might get round to putting a piezo in it sometime, so I can give it a bit of EQ.

Not in a great rush, as I don't really aspire to learning to play it.

Anyway, a friend gave me an old, well worn, cigar box today, which should take my mind off the uke for a bit!

Hi Bill

That's no ugly duckling my friend-great job. It may be a bit quiet due to that large bridge and possibly a thicker than most box top maybe but I am sure you could make it a lot louder very easily. On mine you'll see that the saddle is directly sitting(not glued or attached other than by string pressure)on the top. If you are happy with the action on it and can fashion a new bridge to match the height and take off the top and sand it down to around .100" or so thick; you'll be amazed how much more vibration/sound you may get out of it. Can I ask, where does the neck finish and is it directly attached to the topboard inside the box? Or does it have a 'cutout' section under the lid?

The uke turned out a bit scruffy, so I don't think I posted it.

I don't play the uke myself, so I asked a friend to check it out.

He said it plays OK, but its a bit quiet.

There are only two golden rules for me. Don't stand in front of a shooter or behind a shitter. Everything else within reason is on the table! So, no comment or suggestion would I ever regard as stupid-they are all valid my friend. Please don't go away. Stay here where you are wanted and needed man. It is a tad small I know, but doubling its size by splitting it will help, so yes; it could make a good uke-i haven't done one of those yet-good diddly too but i'm not the no.1 fan of those-a bit limited musically for me but still great. Did you post anything on here when you made your ukey? My first cbg was a 4 string and the box is only 8" long 5 1/2" wide and 3" deep! Works a treat and is electrificated too don't you know?!! There are a couple of pics of it on my page. speak soon. Tom.
