Jabes - the M032s shouldn't need a pre-amp but it is somewhat restricted in it's use for a cigar box amp as the vol pot is part of the module. The M032 is the better option allowing you to fit a vol pot anywhere you want on your box but of course you need to buy the pot seperately. Be aware though that although it's rated at 12 watts - it isn't anywhere near as loud as a normal 10 watt practice amp.

has anyone had any experience of 'KEMO' #MO32S 12 watt amplifier from Maplins ? looks like it could be useful , but i think I might need the pre-amp...

Hi Gary,
If it is a solid rod with bumps on, each bump is a separate piezo pickup so if the string spacing falls between the bumps you can get less sound compared to the strings lying directly over a bump. If you use a flexible cable type of rod pickup you don't get this problem.
