Seasick Steve certainly has a ot to answer for! (-: I saw him on Jools and was amazed he could actually play great music with just three strings, playing out of the box as it were, of course many had thought of it before and its been a great journey though i feel most comfortable with a 4. (-:
Saw Seasick Steve at itunes festival and decided to pick up a cigar box off ebay. Luckily got a good one first time bought a couple more and had a go at making a couple myself currently building my 4th 4 string (also built a couple of Diddly Bows). Each build has brought new challenges and triumphs as 've got slightly more sophisticated each time learning from previous mistakes.
Also found from the playing perspective it opened up a whole new way of playing as oppossed to the standard tuning (or occasionally drop D) I'd always used in the past) and try and us t to build on Grunge, punk, metal, folk and alternatative influences as well as the usual blues.
Steve,
I'm of a slightly older vintage. When I was in my teens in the late 50s I went to see the American Folk Blues Festival. (google it if you don't know it) and wanted a guitar.Cash was tight, so I had to make my own, which I did from a.tea chest and some scrap timber.I've been making and playing ever since and CBG is the natural conclusion to that.I don't use anything new except the strings.
Thanks all. Very much appreciated.
I got into CBG's about 18-24 months ago after seeing Sea Sick Steve on TV. I built a Diddly Bow with my son soon after. I then told my son I was going to make a guitar and he said it would not work, so I took up the challenge. After a lot of searching of the web I found Cigar Box Nation and with a lot of help and advice built a playable 4 string. Got hooked!
I build but do not play; my sons have tried to teach me with no success. I am attending a Chicken-bone John build and play in a day session in Derbyshire in April let see if he can work any miracles....
David
Thanks for the reply Malc. Pretty much the same for me in every word. Yes I am referring to Folkestone and yes will see you there. My eldest boy (20) and myself are attending John's work shop during the day and then my other half and our youngest are meeting us there for the Gig. Look foward to meeting you. Steve.
REPLY TO STEVE K.
I went through art school in the late seventies and experienced the whole punk/DIY thing first hand. Got bored in the highly polished 80's/90's so still clung on to my British R&B (everything from The Faces to Dr Feelgood). Like many of us on here saw an old American hobo on Jools Holland's show with a broken down 3-string guitar playing the most spine-chilling blues/rock I'd heard in years. It was that f**k off, 1976 attitude all over again! Done a bit of online searching, met up with Chickenbone John and Ben 'Roosterman' Moor who taught me how to build, saw Hollowbelly play live and that was it.....I was in love with CBG's. Still building to this day, still can't play a note - but hey-ho, if I keep attending those 'play the Hollowbelly way' courses I might eventually learn!
I take it the gig you're referring to is Folkestone on Saturday?......I'll see you there then fella. Cheers, Malc.
I'm putting together a CBG special for my radio show this coming friday 21st. It's a local Blues show but is streamed live via the internet and then Podcast. This is due to the fact that two special, inspirational Gentlemen will be appearing just up the road from my hometown on Saturday. Chicken Bone John and Hollowbelly. What I would like if people would be so kind is a brief poll as to how/why people got into CBG's especially if, like myself you weren't particularly that musical beforehand. Any help appreciated.
