The Inaugural UK Cigar Box Guitar Festival

Date - Saturday 20th June
Venue - Crossroads Blues Club, Tower of Song Music Bar, Birmingham

I've drafted out a rough framework to get things rolling, but please chip in with ideas of what you'd like to see and do. We have managed to book Hollowbelly to do the main Saturday evening gig, which will also be open to the public, and the venue is booked. Ticket price for the whole day event including all workshops and evening performance will be £25.00 (tea, coffee and light refreshments included), for the evening gig only £5.00.

Programme -
Morning from 10.00am - Welcome and introductions
Demonstrations
Tuning and playing techniques workshop

Afternoon from 2.00pm - Cigar box building workshop
Infomal open mic / jam

Break for early dinner (local pub / curryhouse.....)

8.45pm - Hollowbelly in concert plus support

Close 11.15pm approx

How's this looking guys? Just shout out what you want to put into the mix...nothing's totally fixed yet. The venue is quite small (75 people max) but gets totally jumping when we have a good crowd in, so we are shooting for a capacity audience. For the evening gig, there will be the chance to play in front of an appreciative audience, and depending what the take-up on this is, we may also put together the Chickenbone Crossroads All-Stars house band.

Anybody got any bright ideas for a snappy title for the event - I'm looking to do some press releases to local and national media...so also any help in terms of putting together graphics for publicity material, contacts etc is all welcome.

Sounds fine to me. I can be flexible on dates as a rule.

I'm starting another discussion topic specifically for this plan so we can keep it all in one easy to find place. It's called UK CBG event 2009

Hi guys, just been kicking this idea around with my compadre who I run the club with, and we are up for a Saturday night event. In order to keep costs down, we think it may be better to run a one-day event, keep it simple as this is a first time thing, with a daytime get-together and evening gig, that way it's easier to arrange, and more importantly means that an overnight stopover isn't needed, keeping the cost down. I would mean an early start for those travelling any distance (but we are only 2 or 3 hours away from a large part of the country) , but nothing stopping people staying over, for those who wanted for another dose of CBG stuff the day after.

What do you think...? Date..either before the summer holidays or late summer? Any takers? Any comments? If there's no input it won't happen, but with enough support it will!

I think a two day event might be best to allow for travel etc. A workshop first before a performance might encourage one or two people to get up and have a go later after a bit of rehearsal. Get to know each other a bit too. Juju no probs.

Hey David (smojo) thanks for the offer , that's most kind of you mate - i dont want to put anybody out though ! but we could share the fuel costs and a good Chinwag on the way down !!
i'm pretty much easy on the one or two days - and i'm self employed so i'll tell myself i'm having the time off to meet the lads from the Nation lol!!

john if your wanting to go busking i'll hold the cap , otherwise if i'm playing youll be paying people to listen hehe!!
juju.

What's the general feeling about which day to run it? It could be Saturday pm workshop with evening performance, or Saturday performance with workshop sessions on Sunday. Another idea would be busking in Birmingham city centre on Saturday....always good fun.

A one day event means it all has to happen on the day, including people having to get there, and a two day means there's a stop-over...so what do you good people reckon?

I'd need to check availability of the venue, and we would need a critical mass to make it happen. With guitar workshops, I work on around 12 people to get it to happen..this is different, but feel ideally we'd need a few more to get things buzzing. We'd need to set a date far enough in advance for people to plan their diaries, and for it not to interfere with holidays.

It sounds great actually. Juju, you're in Sheffield right? If I did come I could pick you up maybe and head down M1/M42 to Brum. Any ideas when it might happen C.John? This is the sort of thing I hoped might happen in the UK. Why should those Yankee Doodle Dandies have all the fun :)
