Trying to take photos as I go along. I am going to try and give it a bit of a battered look (means any rought edges are part of the flavour !) Only thing is for some stupid reason I have decided to make this my first 4 stringer as well So all my list of measurements for drilling and cutting are out - does'nt really matter as this is a build by eye job anyhows. We will see what happens.

Ha! Sounds like you already have it built Bo.... in your head anyways!! lol
6 hours is plenty time to build a yeehaw kick-ass CBG, as long as you follow one simple rule. STICK TO THE PLAN!
Do things the way you are used to doing them and ways that you know work - a deadline build is not the time to be reinventing the guitar!

I know what Id do.... build a 'standard' cbg, plain wood box, big cowboy sticker on the front - crossed pistols maybe? Or how about this;

Hope you can find to document the build for us... sounds like a blast!

Your time starts..... NOW! :o)

Stuart, I don't think your gonna have enough time or energy for the screwing bit on Thursday ;)

Hi Bo,

Shame you wont have time to video it - it would be more interesting reality TV to watch than the junk that has been on the box recently. You could call it "Help I'm a CGB bluesman at a folk club - get me out of here."
Good luck - I look forward to the photos.

Regards,
David

Me and my big gob have got me in the kak again ! Whilst having a pint last night it was mentioned that our local folk club (yeah I know - but this is the middle of Herefordshire & they do let me do Blues after the sandles have gone home !) is having its Christmas party on Thursday. Having them to shove their fancy dress up their jacksys, I then said I would build a cowboy themed guitar instead (cowboys & indians fancy dress) !!

Now here is the problem. It is now Monday. I have a maximum of 2 hours per night availailable - 6 hours in total , maybe 7 with tinkering time pre party. Obviouslly Roosterman could make 4 or 5 in this time but I am just a mere mortal. However, I have a Texas licence plate, a soldering iron, a cunning plan and a plan tailored to military precision.

Monday
H -7.30 Have a think to make sure the plan is actually cunning
H -7.00 Start cutting and hacking things up
H -5.00 Stick some of hacked and cut up stuff together

Tuesday

H -4.45 Prise hacked and cut up things off work bench
H -4.30 Check that things actually fit together
H -4.00 Start sanding stuff
H -3.00 Stick some more stuff together (without including bench)

Wednesday

H -2.45 Have an "Arty" attack
H -1.30 Screw stuff together that I forgot to glue at D -5.00

Thursday

H - 1.00 Drill a bit, screw and bit
H- 0.15 Fit strings - tune
H -0.12 Remove strings put bridge where it ought to be
H -0.10 Fit strings - tune
H - 0.07 Take photos
H -0.03 Load photos onto the nation
H Hour - proceed to folk club to raptorous applause, tea and medals

Easy peasy

Now H -7.28 gotta go and think (have me dinner actually then put kids to bed)

Hi there everybody,

just thought I'd mention that my 'Cigar Box Nation' T shirt has just arrived.
Feeling dead chuffed.

I'll just to that and remind you all to use a lubricant when drilling metal. Any light oil will do, then you donlt get so much heat build-up. If the drill bit gets hot it will lose its temper and stop cutting. That is also why you don;t want to go too fast. Easy does it !
Comment by BigBog Cigar Box Guitars on December 9, 2009 at 6:08am
I would say yes to all this, to fast, masonary bits melted thro' did it in the end.
All good.
I am taking all this helpful advice onboard, for next time, just need to get this first one to a point where I can get someone to play a tune out of it then I'll move on to the next BigBog Cigarbox Guitar.
Comment by JUJU on December 9, 2009 at 5:54am
Maybe the Masonary bit worked better because of the carbide tip and just melted it's way through !
but as Kevin has said HSS drills Stainless Steel no problem as long as the bit is sharp and you dont apply too much speed - excessive speed = heat build up which softens the Drill bit then it's dead and needs to be reground (which is not easy without a jig ) or replaced with a new one - check out the Drill speed charts on the manufacturers websites - i'd like to bet you had the drill going much faster than it should have been
juju.
