Can a box be too shallow?

Started by Sean Murphy. Last reply by Raymond Grimmitt Dec 21, 2021. 3 Replies

I picked up two boxes for my first couple of attempts at CBG's; finished the first and I'm getting ready to start the second. The box I got is nice and long, but it's a bit shallow - only 2" deep. I feel like it'll be an interesting build but I'm…Continue

Removing box labels

My first cigar box is on the way, and it's a paper-covered wood one. As cool as the label might be, I'd rather have a plain wood box, so I can customize it to my liking...is there a set method of removing these labels, without ruining the wood…Continue

I built a second CBG, finished Monday night - I can't every do anything simply so I went with a knockoff of a pic I saw on this site recently. It actually worked out really well! I didn't cut a sound hole but the resonance is so good I'm considering…Continue

Hey Everyone!!I am planning on building my first CBG in the near future, and am looking for some suggestions on the best way/easiest way that you have found to notch out the neck? I must admit that I possess very rudimentary "woodworking" skills,…Continue

BINGO!....you nailed it Wichita Sam....I too am glad that many of the "SAME" beginner questions are asked and that folks like yourself are willing to answer them over-and-over again.  Thank you for doing that, amigo.

Just thought I'd comment here on the "Beginners Club" forum.....

I'm not a "beginner".  I was the 64th member out of over 11,XXX to join the Nation and have completed a few hunderd builds (450 and counting).  Recently I looked at early pictures posted, I can say this.  CBGs of new builders are better than they were when I joined.  People are benefitting from searching the forums, looking a pictures for ideas and asking questions here and on other forums....

The same basic questions are being asked and answered and that is good.  I personally tend to be a "point and grunt" learner, so detailed builder blogs help me too.  And, I often come to the Nation when I move into an area of building that I have never been before (just starting to explore winding pickups), to get what seems like the most basic information to someone who has experience in that area.

I guess all that was to say this... "WELCOME".... Use the search functions, but don't hesitate to ask.  In many ways we are all beginners.

Sean, a nice trick is to paint on the f hole and drill out small holes at each end of the "f". Oh, and it's called a "hole saw"...

Hey all! I've been working on my first build. I'm getting close to finishing and debating with myself whether or not to add a humbucker I could salvage from an old Les Paul knock off.

I've been digging the site and all the creative things creative folks are doing!

Hey Josh, I am a fan of the medium sized holes on both sides of the lid approach. I use a 1 and a half inch drill bit (the kind used for cutting holes for doors, I forgot the name) and just go super slow and then I find a washer that's center is 1 and a half or less and just glue it on with super glue.  There are some great ideas in the pictures on here though if you want to go crazy.  I haven't tried an F-Hole yet, but will probably do that soon.  Glad to hear everything is coming together and can't wait to see the pictures!

hey guys just wanted some advice on what I should do for the sound holes? I don't want to cut a huge hole in the middle of my CBG cause my neck is glued on the top of the lid. so I was thinking of making Two small or medium size one on each side of my lid, good or bad Idea let me know. Thanks

Success! I watched a YouTube demo on the process, modified my work, and made the job a success. It turned out to be easier than before and it looks sharp. Thank you all for your input.

Thanks. I've heard of mordacai's book. I'll add it to my collection. Looks like I will be adding more saws to my collection
