I'm doing the DGBE tuning and getting lots of help from a local guitar instructor who has been able to 'downshift' from 6 string by keeping the top 4 of standard tuning.

Comment by Leroy Beal on May 5, 2010 at 5:35pm: Hey Ben, there is no hard and fast rule that dictates what scale length makes a particular instrument. My baritone ukes have roughly a 19.5" scale. The sound board area is almost twice as large and I used the top 4 strings from a nylon classical guitar set. Here is a photo with one of my bari ukes next to the El Cubano Grande.
